Hey everyone.
I am in desperate need of finding a good 8-channel preamp rack for under $1000.

ANY SUGGESTIONS and details would be great.
Thanks

presonus...they're alright and you can get them used for about that much, I think.

Desperate at midnight on a Saturday night. Whoa. :D

Desperation at that time usually involve a few too many drinks and a military furlough.

So, you said a) 8 channels, b) good and c) below a grand.

My take? Select two of the above.

If you select a) and b), there's a wealth of different choices.

If you select b) and c), you could get two FMR RNP's, which would give you four channels. Not bad.

If you select a) and c) there are a couple of choices again, for example something like a Focusrite Octopre. I'm not saying the Octopre is bad, it's actually quite decent considering that most of what we call "high end" pres are around six to ten times as much, but a beaner a channel is pretty much rock bottom. There are a few choices that are even cheaper, but I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

I'm surprised Jason did not suggest the audient ASP008.

It's a bit more than 1000$, but they are clean and usable.

i'm with ola in this, the octopre is a decent choice.
though i warn you: the unit lacks balls TOTALLY, no big sound even with big sounding microphones.
and the compressor/limiter circuits .. those are a joke. really.

When my wife and I bought our house, we decided the interior needed to be painted. The house was ten years old, had one owenr, and still had the original paint job. The timing on the job was ciritcal because we had to move out of the old place within a week, and we wanted the interior of the house to be painted while it was empty for obvious reasons. The painter we hired, who since the job has become a good friend to the family (although he still charges to paint for us), could see that we were slightly panicked about the job. We wanted a great job, and we needed it within a week, and we were already stretched to the max because we had just placed a huge downpayment on a house.

He put it like this:

"You can pick any two of these three choices. I don't care which two you pick. You can have it good, fast, or cheap."

Yeah. We chose good and fast. It wasn't cheap.

Unfortuantely, this doesn't work well as a freelance mixer because I'm certainly not going to offer good and cheap. And I'd rather not offer fast and cheap at the expense of good. So, that only leaves good and fast.

More than usable. They are quite nice is a neutral, fairly expressive manner.

No extra ass on the low end and not to much fake spizz on the high end.

Usable indeed.
