Hello,
I need some advice on mixers. I'm currently mixing through a Mackie Onyx 1640. I'm looking to purchase a Mackie 32x8 Bus Series. I've read some good reviews, but would like some more opinions. Or, if you know of any other good mixers I could check out that are in the same price range. Thanks in advance.

Soundtracs Topaz. Mine lays waste to any Mackie I've laid hands on. Watch ebay and craigs list, they come up now and again.

What do you want from the console? You need to establish what your needs are for anyone to comment....

The Mackie 8-bus consoles are pretty grim sounding. Thin and lifeless. The Onyx you have is probably better.

I would take a look at the Toft ATB, which sounds a whole lot nicer. It will be more expensive, however, but still a great deal considering what you're getting.

I had a Mackie 8 bus before I got a Soundcraft Ghost.

To be honest, The mackie had lots of problems with the ribbon cable which caused intermittent problems with the 2 bus, the aux's.

I bought the board new, it didn't make it through the warranty period of one year...so they actually gave me another board, which started giving me the same problems as the first one within a few months. so they repaired it (had to ship the thing to Washington $$) then I sold it when I got it back.

I bought the 32 chanel Ghost and have been happy ever since.

I would avoid the Mackie.

I've also read some similar things about the ribbons in the Mackie 32x8. Are you the same guy that's selling a Ghost on Craigslist? I just noticed we're in the same city. If not, I found one for sale on craigslist, so I'm thinking about getting it.

As for the question about what my needs are. I'm looking for something with 32 channels or more, 8 bus', 32 I/O's or more, so I can mix everything on the mixer and bus it back to DAW to bounce to mp3. A warm sound would be nice too :) I already have my a/d converters ready, just need a worthy mixer to plug it into. Oh, and I also need world domination. That's a must have ;)

Ms D is definately female...and a talented engineer/guitarist...it would be inappropriate to comment on any other attributes.

How ya BEEN Ms D?

Nope, That's not me.
But I did see it on craigs list.

It would be worth checking it out, The price wasn't too bad.

Picked up a CAD Maxcon not too long ago, for home. It's a desk from the 80's and something you may want to check out, given you can find some decent deals on them. They're modular (by 4's) and have some good routing options.

Once owned a Topaz too. Nice board.

There are very few new boards out there, if any, that come close to the Toft bang-for-the-buck right now.

otek has the right idea about the 8 bus. I've owned both of those mixers and the 8 bus is clearly a step backwards in the sound quality department compared to the Onyx.. it just sounds kinda "blah"....
