MiX iT! 3 - Download + Mix It

Sponsored by Kagi Media (http://kagimedia.com) and Auraleo Advanced Learning (http://auraleo.com)

Sign ups are now closed + we'd like to thank all of you who signed up for MiX iT! 3. We have 180+ mixers this time!! In this thread you'll find the links to download the files + the rules for the Mixing phase.

Timeframe
You have 1 week starting now until Wednesday, April 23, 2008 to download the files.
You have 2 weeks starting now until Wednesday, April 30, 2008 to complete your mix.
We do not want you to upload your mix during these 2 weeks. There will be a dedicated thread for this starting on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at which point you will have 48 hours to upload your MIX, until Friday, May 2, 2008.
The Song

The song you are about to MIX and which has won the submissions poll is:

Aren't You Proud - by Strange Faces

xxx

Strange Faces on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/strangefacestheband)

Thank you very much Strange Faces + Mixerman for providing the multitrack masters of your song + production, and for allowing us to mix it. You guyz rock!!

MiX iT! Rules

Imagine the following scenario : You get a phone call from Mixerman. He wants you to mix his latest production, a track called 'Aren't You Proud' for the band Strange Faces. All tracking and editing has been done and now they want YOU to do a great MIX for them. And that is exactly what we want you to do ... MiX iT!
You may mix the song using any tools you like (software or hardware).
You may use sample replacement for the drums.
Time or Pitch correction tools are NOT allowed. This event is about mixing, and that is what we want to focus on. While pitch or time correction tools may or may not find their way into your daily work flow, it is our strong opinion that these are not mixing tools. We think there is more to learn by working with the source files as they come. This event is first and foremost a learning experience.

The only 'editing' exception we would like to allow is this : You can make creative arrangement decisions as long as you use the original audio files.
You will provide us with a stereo mix (m4a, m4p, or AAC @ 192 Kbps... iTunes can be used) and a zipped version of your project/session file (if mixed with DAW), or jpgs of hardware settings (if mixed on console + OBG).
Download Info

In order to proceed you will have to download the audio files using the link below.
Download size: zipped approx 470 MB
After unzipping you will find 20 files in WAV format. Total size: approx 600 MB
These are rendered contiguous multi-track mono audio files @ 44.1k / 24 bit.
The files will be available for download for only 1 week until Wednesday, April 23, 2008.
You may download the file ONLY if you signed up (http://thewombforums.com/showthread.php?t=7124) for MiX iT! 3.

FLAC

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio. FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec. Visit their website (http://flac.sourceforge.net) for more info.

We recommend these apps to decode FLAC files:

Windows: FLAC for Windows 1.21b (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Codecs/FLAC-for-Windows.shtml)(Note for Vista users: if the installer is getting stuck, try this workaround (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=52353))
Mac: xACT 1.62 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952)

Some other options: FLAC Downloads (http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html)

I believe .zip compression is about 80% close to what FLAC can achieve as for reduction of filesize.

Hi all,

I was so glad to participate to this event but it appears that I cannot unzip the file on my mac.
I tried with stuffit expander Bom Archiver and Zip it.
I don't know what is wrong with the file. If somebody could tell me if he has the same kind of problem or somebody who could help me.

Thanks

I had no problems unzipping the file, however, when I attempt to audition any one of the files through Windows Media Player I get an error that says "Class Factory cannot supply requested Class". That could be due to them being 24 bit, though, because Nuendo didn't seem to have a problem importing the random one I tried. Maybe try a different program to audition a couple of the individual .wavs?

In that case it sounds to me like your standard Internet file corruption. As painful as it sounds I'd try deleting those files and re-downloading a fresh copy and see what happens there.

Good luck.

What platform are you on?
Have you done a scandisk-type check of your hard drive integrity lately?
The reason I ask is that due to the way TCP-IP works it's EXTREMELY unlikely that the actual transmission got b0rked.. even *one* time, let alone *twice*, assuming that your download(s) completed in an apparently error free manner.

I suspect either a hardware problem or a misbehaving zip utility.
If you're on Vista (blecch) the built-in zip functionality is crap.
Get 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) instead, and use that.
It may not solve your problem, but it's worth a shot.

The room mic's made me stop working on it for the last couple of hours. I've never had a pair (or trio) of mic's distract me so much. I need to get over them or I can't do this.

I was able to download, unzip and import without issue.

Just a quick note for the few people who are having a few issues with these zip files.

These files are OK. Wether you or anybody else downloads them ... they are exactly the same one for everybody.

So ... if you encounter problems, it is very unlikely that the files are to blame. Especially seeing the number of people that do not have any issues with them - which seems to be the vast majority.

I would suggest you first burn that zip file to a CD and bring it to another computer, and try it on that one.

I would also suggest you verify whatever version of compression / decompression program you're running. Chances are that it is not compatible.

Downloaded using safari (mac) 300kb/s, transferred to PC windows XP, unzipped, imported straight into session. No problems.

Just to let the people concerned know it worked for me.

Did get a couple of stray hammond notes at the end of the vocal track, no biggie.

Don't really see the point in trying to audition these files in WMP. That's just a recipe for disaster.

Tracks sound great. Nice job MM.

Actually, for audio zip doesn't even come close :)

The flac files last time caused rather a lot of problems for some (and a lot of hassle for Charles), I suspect that's the reason for just going with wav files this time round.

I used Mac OS 10.4.11 "Create Archive" function to make the zip.

I then test unzipped it + it came back fine.

Your Mac should simply unarchive it all by itself.

What Mac OS do you have?

It may have been corrupted on the download. You might want to try downloading it again.

chris, when downloading from servers which are deathly slow, just like the one these files are on, my browser will time out halfway through files and then declare them finished, and so it looks like the file is finished, and it's not at all.

um, i did finally get the file and it's all loaded in PT but i wonder if this isn't whats happening to others. i really don't think aueralierio are equipped for 100+ people downloading a huge file from their server all at once.

It's my understanding that the files are the same but the flac files are more easily divided into smaller files for more convenient downloading. The actual wave files you eventually end up with are the same no matter which download method you use.

I wonder if BitTorrent would be a useful distribution method for the MiXiT multitracks. It's ideally suited to "everybody downloading a big file at the same time" situations such as this. And there's two very good, simple to use clients for both Mac OS and Windows.

I'd be happy to help set it up for the next one :)

Very true - how about breaking the tracks into stem zip files? Instead of one big huge file, a few "smaller" ones so that folks who are experiencing drop-outs on the long-haul downloads can deal with a smaller bites?

btw - my download was fairly straight forward: about twenty minutes and no corrupt files (Mac Pro, Firefox, Cable Modem)

As Billy_B said, the end result is essentially the same.

FLAC is a lossless codec, which means there is NO LOSS in quality when using it to data compress files.

In comparison, mp3, mp4, + aac are all lossy codecs, meaning there is some loss in quality.

I have to drop out of this mix event (my first effort). I couldn't get the .wav files to download correctly and the FLAC files, which I downloaded successfully, cause lots of audio drop outs in REAPER (never had that problem before) ???.

Hi Dave,

You should convert the FLAC files to WAV before starting. The overhead of decoding 20 FLAC files while playing will be what's causing the dropouts.

You can use foobar2000 (http://foobar2000.org/) to convert the FLAC's to WAVs. Let me know if you need any more help with this.

question: as far as jpegs for otb mixes, what happens if the pictures are just ass and don't show anything? i did it on the aws+, xlogic, and mpx 500 but looking at the pics from my celly (the only way for me to take it), it's hard to even tell what board i'm using, let alone the settings.

I'd love the prospect of spanking the guy who forced you to use it. Don't worry - it's on the house.

I'm sorry but I couldn't find the appropriate smiley.

Aside from uploading a stereo mix, the rules ask for a zipped project/session file. I'm using Cakewalk Sonar. I can either zip up the whole project and upload it or save it as a Cakewalk "bundle" file and upload. Does it really matter which one I do?

I don't know Cakewalk, but usually the archive type which excludes(!) the original audio file is preferred for obvious reasons.
