Welcome to our advanced mixing and DAW techniques forum. Chris Lambrechts + I are glad you’ve come to check us out.

A little bit bout myself:

I'm an engineer, mixer + producer based out of Miami. And I love talking about mixing.

I've mixed records on SSL's, Neve's + various DAWs, but it's not the format I enjoy talking about, it's the creative process of mixing that really excites me. That final stage of record making can be a magical process, and helping others + myself understand it better is a passion of mine.

I've also been making records with DAWs as the sole multitrack for about ten years, + for the last eight most of my mixes have been done completely inside-the-box (no external console or outboard gear). So, I'd love to discuss both tips + techniques that are specific to DAW's, but also techniques that apply to any platform.

A few years ago I wrote a series of articles called Hard Disk Life, essentially a twelve-part online course in mixing. We went thru a mix a track at a time, discussing the plug-ins, FX's + automation (see links below).

And last year I released Mix It Like A Record (http://www.likearecord.com) (MiLaR), a DVD/DAW session-based mixing course. Similar to the articles, on the DVD we go thru a mix element by element + the ROM layer contains the DAW sessions.

MiLaR forum:

My main goal here is education. I'm co-modding @ The Womb with Chris, because I want to exchange ideas with other musicians, engineers, mixers + producers. So, please share anything you feel we can learn from. I for one am all ears. And for my part, I'll do my best to answer questions in the most helpful way I know how.

And if you didn't drink the kool-aid + think this whole DAW mixing thing is stoopid, or if you disagree (©2006 Mixerman) with my approach, we'd like to hear from you too. It's ALL good. We're definitely open to hearing everyone's opinion on the subject. Positive or negative. This ain't the MiLaR fan club.

I think we can all agree on one thing: there is no "right way" to do anything when making records. There's just the way that works best for you @ the time you're doing it.

Posting suggestions:

We don't really have any rules round here, but I'd like to pass along a cupla things I always try to keep in mind:

It's not what you say, but how you say it that makes all the difference.
Courtesy + respect are the lubricants of life.

I would never want you to refrain from posting with great emotion, emphasis, or conviction. Some of the best posts come from the heart. I just ask that you please do so with respect towards those you are addressing. Thanx a lot.

Let's have fun, share our ideas, + learn as much as we can. I look forward to discussing mixing with all of you.

Thanks everyone for your kind greetings. I'm really glad to be here!

Skyy, B, Big Al, Shan + everyone, great seeing all of you!!

Controversy + disagreement are things I've never invested much energy avoiding. I feel it can cause you to play it safe in an industry where playing safe doesn't really feed the creative animal. So, I added this little addition to my first post above to make those, who don't particularly agree with the in-the-box approach, feel welcome.

And if you didn't drink the kool-aid + think this whole idea of DAW mixing is stoopid, or if you disagree (©2006 Mixerman) with my approach, we'd like to hear from you too. It's ALL good. We're definitely open to hearing everyone's opinion on the subject. Positive or negative. This ain't the MiLaR fan club, it's a DAW mixing forum.

I think we can all agree on one thing, there is no "right way" to do anything when making records. There's just the way that works best for you @ the time your doing it.

I hope regardless of your opinion, tools or techniques, you'll post + paricipate in our discussion of mixing. We'd all love to hear from you.

Thanks!!

My 10 cent history, is I have a undergrad degree in Music and Audio Mixing, then worked in live sound for some big names, then 12 years ago, I started in as an audio post production supervisor for PBS. Would have to agree with the rest... this forum rocks. Man I can remember back in the day when I was just excited to get a copy of MIX magazine (in newspaper format back then). There wasn't alot of knowledge being shared. Recording on a (then state of the art) 3340-S was the coolest thing ever. Now look what we've got. Tools and Information up the %^@#$ss. What a great time to be alive... Oh and BTW that was in 1978... Ouch!! :icon_eek:

Funny you should mention that. I just cleaned up mine along with the 3300-s 1/2 track...got them both in 73. Brings back many memories...or at least those I can remember :D

cool... we just purchased a 3300 last week... thought it would be fun to play with that old vintage machine... in all we have three vintage machines in our studio.. trs-8, 3340-s, and the affore mentioned 3300. Don't know that we'll use them much, but we figured hey why not. And yes the memories... you can actually see pictures of our old studio at www.fermersweb.com. they were taken around 78 or 79... but I digress. This is supposed to be the welcome Charles Dye thread. Well Charles, now you know a little bit more about some of us old timers.
