View Full Version : Growing up on the DUC

So, lately I'm finding myself wanting to go back onto the DUC to tell all those semi-beginners to listen to the few pearls of wisdom on the board.

Let me explain:

See, when I first got into PT, I was a DUC hound. That's where I learned some basic on how to use PT, install problems, etc. After a couple years, I really started to get tired of the same old thing over and over again -

"PT petittion - what features do you want"
"How much Ram do I need"
"what is the best mic under $200"
"No Audio, please help!!"
"what gear can I buy under $500 that will improve my recordings"

etc...

Dont get me wrong, I was there once, but it does get old.

However, there where a few guys, guys who had some experience, that would provide great little pearls of wisdom that seemed to go un-believed and un-listened. Things like-

"You can do more with sm57's than crap condensers"
"If your room isn't treated, it doesn't matter what monitors you get"
"It's not the gear, it's your ears"
"Just because you have an 001 and an MXl mic, it doesn't mean you are an engineer"
"You can't go wrong with a M88 or a SM7B"
"Just because you don't see red, doesn't mean you aren't clipping"
"Use your ears, not your eyes"
"Learn to maximize the gear you have"

Anyway, the point to all this is....they were right!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.:Coolio:

yeah, ahhh, memories. i remember the duc. i think after my 5th or 6th banning i found the old, old recpit. as in when the mixerman diaries were actually being posted as threads. suddenly i was surrounded by people who actually knew what the fuck they were talking about. you could tell someone to eat your nuts without getting banned (although later, in a newer incarnation of the recpit i was banned from one half of the forum for telling a prominent mastering engineer to do just that. he started it  ).

there were so many wankers on the duc back then, it was amazing. i shudder to think what its like now. its always good when a nugget of wisdom clicks for someone over there, cause it brings worthwhile posters here. its like graduating and coming to high school here. or maybe hitting puberty. in which case john sayers forum would be where the adults full of wisdom and patience go. and gearslutz is where you go when youre ready to die i guess.

WOW!!! This is so me! I used to actually learn at the DUC then there came the day I found a link on the DUC to the mixerman diaries, and all of a sudden was not learning anything at the DUC anymore. I passed on my fair share of knowledge to the noobs, and set my sights on the new found adventure of the rec pit.
I have to admit, sifting through all the sarcasm, was a bit of a task at first, but it did not take long to catch on, and start finding some REAL pearls of wisdom!
Im thankful for those dang diaries thats for sure!!!
I owe you my life guys...thanks a lot mixie!!!!
Sorry I am a little emotional right now :Roll eyes: :finger:

actually you can do more or less the SAME things with (crappy) SM57s as with crappy condensers.
just for less money.

The condenser won't still work after you bang in a few nails with it.

How could you tell? Weren't you hitting puberty at the same time you discovered the recpit

I grew up on an Ampex 2" 16 track. When Pro Tools came around I paid 5K for a 4 track rig. That led to my first DAW gig. The company ran an 8 track Otari Pro Disk. The guy that hired me was terrified when we started getting clients... just couldn't handle the pressure of sessions with producers and directors sitting behind him and barking orders. I remember once when we were mixing down to a time-code DAT the Otari Dat machine suddenly went out of lock and just took off with a weeeeeeeeeeeeeng! That was his last session for a year or so.

Later, the sweetest accountant you ever met embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars and brought the company down. We all lost our jobs.

I don't see the DUC as something you grow out of.

It's a different place. Different vibe.

Same as GS. I like them all for different reasons.

Weedy posted a link to some old DUC thread somewhere else which brought memories.

Old days DUC ... I sure miss it but like Kenny kinda indicated ... different vibe ... especially these days.

Does anyone here remember the digi usersgroup email thingy that existed long before the DUC ?

In a way it is like this place ... if and when it ever grows as big as the DUC or GS etc ... there will be 90 % bullshit as well.

The compromise between becoming big and staying small ... signal to noise ratio blah etc ...

Oh well ...

I'm sure the HD section is rather different to the LE section

It's still a resource to me.

But it's not a community. Not for me.

All the people I care about from the DUC are usually in other places (like here) which are a community.

But if you want to search a DAE error, there's probably no better place.

The good old days my friends and I were just weaning ourselves off of the 20 bit ADAT XT's. I remember when PT Free was released for Win 98. Someone on the DUC figured out that it would work with an Audiophile 24/96. That was great because we could get decent audio (compared to stock sounds cards) in and out even if only 8 track. Then they released D-Verb for it to the free users. I was so happy when I plunked down my debit card to get that plug. LOL

Man PT Free was buggy. But the marketing plan worked, they hooked my young mind and I ended up getting an M-Box. Even took an 11% "computer loan" from my credit union to get a shiny new Quick Silver G4/Paper weight. LOL

The good old days.

Now its PC's and Nuendo I haven’t been back in years.

I like the place as much as the next guy, but can we
get over ourselves now so i can ask question?

How do i make my mix louder than everyone else
for the mixit event? :Coolio:

You'd be sadly surprised!

I go there from time to time to see whats for sale. The posters all have the same questiosn as stated above from Doyle yet to theis day. The search tool has NEVER worked well and just seems that it is a endless database of SUCK. I get amused really at things on there, but someway, shape or form feel compelled at times to help. Having been there before, like Kenny said it is a different vibe and place. I am by no means a better person to NOT go there, nor a better mixer. Granted I know deep down that I am, but I try to help out. The music biz is a difficult place and when you PISS one person off, it gets around and is sometimes hard to come back into flavor with.

GS I hardly ever go to. Seems to be more of a place where people are too concerned to see what the beeps and sweeks are all about and not really into how to go about making music and recording a record. Rather just HAMMER away at making something that a person LOVES feel like shit. I mean if a guy can record a record with a Eureka pre and be on a major label, sell ALOT of records and make it sound good, then GOOD ON HIM for not needing a pre that is 3, 4, 5 times that cost. Way to adapt and MAKE IT WORK.

I love the WOMB mainly because there are industry guys here. Some guys fuses are shorter than others, but everyone seems to really dig their heels in and make shit happen. Critiques are deadly accurate, but insight is always in a way that tends to help correct the mix to allow a better end result. Granted there are a few GAIN STAGE - "HOW HOT CAN PRO TOOLS GO" POST rings a bell that are the exception, but all and all this forum is spot on. Reality sucks sometimes ya know.

Good stuff guys, thanks for helping to make it happen.

Best,

Doc

It's easy to feel that way but I know for a fact that for every "lost in the world of gear" type over there, there are ten people just reading and learning.

If every teacher stopped teaching because 10% of the class wasn't paying attention, what a sad state we'd be in.

Yes, but the problem over "there" is that it's like that commercial they run now where 200 people run onto the tennis court during the match and all try to compete at the same time... the amateurs, the beginners, the clueless... all indistinguishable from one another.

Every time I see that commercial I think of 100 high schoolers running into my control room with their mboxes and pushing me out of the way.

In seriousness, I think people can see thru the bullshit more than you think.

Agreed Kenny, and I do post there from time to time and read on opinions of gear before I buy a piece. It is a forum with a bunch of intel or sure. I prefer this place MUCH better though.

I met Mudcat on the DUC, I guess in 1999 or 2000.
I started doing online collabs with him.
And with others.
Then, while on holiday in Tuscany, piggybackin' someone's internet connection, through a DUC link I stumbled upong the MM diaries, and the Recpit. Instantly hooked.
After lurking there for a while I started posting and soon got flamed by Loudist, Rokker and Shotgun for opening my big trap when I should have just listened.
Then came along CaPE, and through that I met Malice.
The rest (for me) is history.

Never thought I would say that, but I gotta say...thanks to the DUC.
