i've heard some really good things about the D6 specifically and was wondering what you guys think of the rest of the mics in the drum pack. i'm wanting to invest in some good drum mics and just seeing what the options are. I'm used to 421's, 57's d112, and 414's as drum mics, but i don't own them, i just have occasional access to them. Thoughts?

Edit: More Specifically the Audix DP 5A 5-Piece Drum Mic Kit consisting of the following mics:
* i-5 snare mic
* 2 - D-2 tom mics
* D-4 floor tom mic
* D-6 kick mic
* 4 D-Vice gooseneck clips

While I've heard good things about all the Audix mics, given a choice, I'd probably try to increase my occasional access to the 57s, 112s, 421s and 414s. :D

"Pointy" as all fuck.

Kinda hyped to hell and back in a not altogether unpleasant way.

So... Built in "metalhead-kiddie-kurve" for kick and tom mics.

I don't mind using them at all.

Overall the D6 is the best of the bunch to my ears.

we used all of those mics on drums in our songs. You can hear them on the first 2 songs on myspace.com/starfucker if you like.

We also used the set on trial on our demo session last week and our AE liked it, said it sounded really good and cost next to nothing.

+1 for the D6 and i5. Like every mic, it's not always the best option...and they are very modern/hyped (less so the i5) but sometimes that's what you want. Last band I worked with, everyone was really digging the D6 in particular.

For a general-purpose must-use-always set (that would record jazz, pop, etc along with all varieties of rock), I can't recommend them because of their specific sound...but I'm very glad I have a D6 along with my D112, and an i5 to go with my Ortmann 57's.

I have three Audix mics: D6, i5, D4.

I've never had a problem with D6 on Kick. I prefer an sm57 on snare, so i5 sees a lot of rack toms. The D4 is great for floor toms and bass amps.

made the best kick-livesound with the D6. the i5 on rockvocals is cool, snare, sometimes. I like em. not the tom mics.. dont know why. just not pleasent to my metal-ears.:D

Agree with The Cupped Crusader and Slippy.

They're decent mics, they're very coloured in the clickety-click-kinda way. I hate their sound by default, but I hate most things by default. Sometimes they do the trick.

The D2 is very strongly hypercardioid. I had to give it a go on the snare cause it was the only mic I could fit around the snare without causing a queen fit, leading to WW3. A lot of back lobe stuff from the hats was what I got first...

I dunno about that D6. I don't mind the D2's on toms...the scoop isn't super unpleasant and sounds kinda nice with the whole pinstripe/EC2 tom sound...but the D6 is so papery for my tastes...it's not bad on the outside of a kick...but I think I like 57's better inside kicks...and I'll definitely reach for my RE20 or my ATM 25's before I grab a D6 on the inside...wonder if they'd sound any good on floor toms, though...anyone tried that?

but the D6 is so papery for my tastes...

Is "papery" like "cardboardy", only thinner? :D

Interesting... cool for anything else than drums perhaps?

Interesting... cool for anything else than drums perhaps?Just about anywhere you use a 57, you can try an i5. Just a different sound, I find it a bit less biting yet a bit more open and more scooped...still very much a medium-diaphragm dynamic type of sound.

If a 57 sounds like dark red, the i5 sounds like orange. How's that for a message board analogy. :lol:

ironically enough...that's not a bad way to describe it!

The midrange doesn't exist...I'd rather pull it out selectively than have that wide swath pulled out for me. I still think it would make for a great floor tom mic in a metal setting...
