OK, I finally gave in. zzounds had a warehouse-resealed one for a discount... pretty soon, I'm gonna have one of those cool looking (though fuckin' wobbly-assed and non cat proofed) Apex 'ultimate' stands (itself a pawnshop find, beat but functional) with TWO ferrari red synths on it-

Nord Lead 2X (as heard in my outro for the Team Conception solo!)
Nord Electro 2 (61).

I'm pretty pumped about this. I've been stalling forever, even though I've got a bit of use out of the Lead and totally found 'my voice' synth-wise- but it seemed like, I'm not a real keyboard player, wtf?

Well, who gives a fuck? This is gonna be awesome.

I hear from reputable sources that Nord is shit because it's thin-sounding, and this is true when I plug it into my guitar amp, but when I go into the hi-Z input of an API 3124 I just don't find that to be a problem, and these things- I don't know, it's like asking a Danelectro freak why he bothers or something. Fuck it, I love my Nord Lead, it makes all the synth noises I want, and I've been listening to clips of the Electro 2 for a year now.

Granted there isn't a solo piano in the fucker, so what- I could still use what I heard for certain things, and the Rhodes and B3 type sounds are completely what I'm after. And clav, wurly- should be great. I've tried getting rhodes and B3 sounds out of the Logic 8 software instruments and had to work really hard to get it where I wanted it.

This is my formal statement in the 'you may now openly lust for gear' forum that I love me some Nord, and fuck anybody who doesn't like it :D

I'm always happy when someone gets a Nord, I've ALWAYS drooled over everything they have on the market: the Lead, Electro, Stage...the Organ...for fucks sake, that's like the coolest B3 hardware emulation EVER

Really happy for you Chris, someday, I'll have a couple of Nords too :)

Compared to what exactly?

I always found the Nords to be awesome-sounding keyboards.

I really love the Nord Lead 2...I used the first version and while it wasn't as huge as, say, a minimoog, had its own character and sat great on a heavy mix.

I didn't liked the NL3 as much, but clavia makes great sounding synths IMO

On several occasions it has replaced a real rhodes or b3 on a critical session for me.

I'm not the world's biggest Nord fanboy, so am not familiar with their entire product line (despite Otek's best efforts ), but I've heard some timbres on the Nord Lead that give the absolute fucking lie to the assertion that they sound thin.

For programmability, there's one at least comes close to the flexibility of my Kurzweil. Not for the last time have I thought about spending some time alone with one.

Compared to what exactly?

To the various Virus incarnations perhaps? Or the Waldorf Q?

I had both the original Nordlead and the Nordlead 2 at some time; and while I found them very solid and good sounding machines they had a certain "basic" quality to me. Solid, but not too special. A bit like the "second tier" during the "real" analog days - synths like the Prophet 600 or the Roland Juno 106.

+1 for Nord.

Whoever says that these machines sound thin might need to clean out their ears. These sound great! A couple of my clients have replaced their old organs with the Nord dual C1. Sound absolutely awesome.
