One Vote!

That's not fair! Now I have to think about this a little while...

Msr. Slop-Cosmique and I seem to agree on which song is actually THE best, but... by the same token, it is likely to be well-represented enough to make it to the round of eight without my help. So do I:

A) Vote for a strong contender for 'second best', in an effort to positively influence the next rounds.

B) Vote for a quirky outsider, just to make it interesting.

C) Vote for my own tired-sounding horse.

D) Vote for Scratchy's song, because, what the hell, it's the best.

And you can't even watch the results until you've voted. Fiendish.

Gonna sleep on it.

That's me! Now vote, please!

Best,

Marco.

Edit: I was just kiddin'! Thanks a lot for the support, but please don't vote because of the above - only if you like that tune! Thx + best luck to all, Marco.

I voted for Dik's tune because he has nice legs and I can dance to it.

I'm listening to these songs, and I have just one thing to say. When you're demoing your SONG, always turn the vocal up too loud.

Many of these songs, I'm having trouble making out the words. If I can't make out the words, you don't get my vote.

This reflects accurately the business of placing songs.

TURN UP THE VOCAL PEOPLE!

I'll be back with my vote.

I dug Mexico. I liked Shipbuilding, but I think the recording is right as it is. I wouldn't want to redo it as a producer. Never make your demo too good! Come and Get it is a good modern pop/rock song. But my vote has to go to Dikledoux's Best Thing. Very clever lyric. Great melody and changes. I like it.

Now, that doesn't mean that's the song I vote for at the end. It might be. But there are other songs, that were good, that just might grow on me. So, fear not! Carry forward. And good luck.

Well, if we're gonna get like that......don't write a verse until you have a chorus that kills.

And make sure that killer chorus happens in the first :60.

Verses only explain why the chorus kills.

It's in the rule book.

And yeah, rules are made to be broken.

But it better be really fuckin good.

Are you refering to Shipbuilding here?

If so ya got me baffled??
I edited the song from a 7 minute demo I recorded
to bring the song to a reasonable lenth, file wise

It seems sorta stiff to my ears,as I cut out a lot of the
chord progressions, that take one section into the next.

And that distorting acoustic Guitar ..

Where the fucks Mudcat when ya need him??

I see you have good taste in music. :D The only song that stuck with me was Shipbuilding and I can't vote on myself, so my vote went to Scratchy. The other song where too generic in my opinion.

These are the questions I asked myself before entering this comp.

1. Does your song tell a story that could easily be captured by camera..(video)

2. Does the song have a memorable hook?

3. Is the song mainstream and marketable?

4. Will your song attract a younger crowd as well as be suitable for older audiences?

Thanks again for listening to "gone"

Well I gotta agree with offended again:)) Plus a couple of thoughts..

1. Maybe we need to include lyric sheets. I think there are some "clever" lyrics in ALOT of these songs that I also can barely hear. That being said I would HATE for anyone to loose over not hearing all the words..

2. As far as songs being to "complete". I think it depends on who you are. I hear both sides. Some want a more "complete" song so they dont have to think as much about what needs to be done and or it is harder to make certain songs sound as kool as they can with just a guitar or piano etcc..Mixerman is right.. Some just want to hear the basics. I just think that depends.. My thoughts.. :))
I am just glad I am not judging this :)) Great Stuff!!!

Life lesson. Better here than in the real world.

TURN THE FUCKING VOCAL UP.

If you need to hand out a lyric sheet, you didn't place the vocal properly.

Just in case I wasn't clear...

TURN THE FUCKING VOCAL UP.

Especially on a demo.

And even if it's supposed to be the "real thing," and yes, I get it, you want the track to be strong, you STILL need to make it so that the listener can make out the words.

I am just glad I am not judging this :)) Great Stuff!!!Many great songs didn't get produced or sung by an A-list artist because the demo was too good.

That's a fact.

On the other side of the spectrum, many great songs didn't get produced or sung by an A-list artist because the demo was too poor.

That's also a fact.

When making a demo for songwriting purposes, the demo has to be good enough that the singer (and publisher) can be wowed by the song, but not so great, that the singer and producer don't feel they can't beat it. NO ONE, wants to produce a song, that they might not be able to beat the demo of.

Who gives a fuck about a distorted guitar? That only ruins YOUR enjoyment of the song. It doesn't affect the listener that way.

I listened to it at low volume last night. Maybe the recording isn't the greatest. Maybe it's all cut up. But I think you captured something with the performances. Hey, I might turn it up next round and think I could spray a can of whoop ass on the thing. Wouldn't be the first time I've changed my mind. But last night, I liked it for what it was. It had the right guitar figures. I liked the arrangement. and I liked the vocal. I didn't listen to it, and as a producer, get excited to redo it, even though I liked the song. I thought to myself, "I wouldn't want to redo this song."

For me, as a judge, one of my basic criteria is this. If we're going to put our A-Team together from our network of talented pros in order to remake one of these songs, is it a song that we can kill? Like the Mixerman Theme Song. Our team KILLED it. This must be similar.

Enjoy,

Mixerman

For me I thought dik's song was the "best thing" ( leave me alone, I'm funny dammit) and I thought jstuart's song had a Colin Hay vibe that I really liked, but both those guys had a bunch of votes.

So I voted for Steve's Come & Get it song cause I thought it sounded really good and would like to see it get considered also.

That's it!!! I couldn't put my finger on it, but you're right. And to be clear, having a Colin Hay vibe should be viewed as a big compliment in my book.

I also liked the way it was presented. Two solid musicians doing a stripped down guitar/vocal version of the song.

If you need to hand out a lyric sheet, you didn't place the vocal properly.

Well, this is the internet; and I wouldn't exactly rule out the possibility that there might be one or another non-native speaker around here...

Doesn't matter how much the vocals are turned up - I'm only getting part of the lyrics. Being able to read them means that I'm usually getting close to 100%.

I have to agree with the whole 'I need to hear the fuckin lyrics you bunch of useless talentless cock suckers" thing.

I'm not a lyricist. So... that's the first thing I listen for.

I can change/rearrange/develop the music, but the lyrics... naaa...

I can advise/edit/suggest direction of the lyrics, but write.. no.

But thats just me. Good luck everyone.....
