Folder Splitter does exactly what you think.
Splits your folder into many smaller folders.
Great for Backups.
Has an option for copy or move.
Also has a preview so you don't commit until it looks ok.
Let's you choose the size of the folders.
So if you're backing up to CD or DVD, it's perfect.
And if you're uploading to free servers like MediaFire or YouSendIt, which have 100MB file limits, just cut up your sessions into many smaller pieces.
I just did it for a mixing session and it saved me a ton of time.
It's free.

Thanks Kenny, this looks great.
Though for archiving, Toast does all that automatically these days. You just drop your huuuge folder in and it splits it across multiple CDs/DVD's. It keeps the folder structure the same as in the parent folder.

Does it require Toast on the other side?
Does it keep files whole?
I used to use Retrospect but I hated the idea of needing that application years from now.

Nope.
They do include a little application (it gets burned on all the discs, though I think you can disable it too) that restores the files in their original locations, but it's easy to do yourself, as the folder structures remain the same on all the CDs/DVDs. So you don't really need the little app.

Yep. I dunno what happens with files larger than one disc.

Me too. There's the forward compatibility problem involved. But this new(ish. I think it's been an option since version 7) toast thing works like a charm for me. I've recovered some stuff from multiple DVDs and it worked out great. And it's so simple to archive things. You just drag the folder in toast and feed it DVDs until it's happy. You can work on other things meanwhile.
The problems are that it's not free and their support for OS upgrades is lousy/inexistent/costly. Generally, you have to buy a new one for each major OS X update. Which sucks.
This folder splitter looks like a nice, but slightly more laborious alternative.

It depends.
I actually divide things for Mediafire and Yousendit a lot more these days.
Even puts them back when you're done.
I suppose I should be backing up to DVD but who has the time. :Uh oh:

I guess that can be pretty useful. Personally, I use neither Mediafire nor Yousendit.

Roughly once or twice a year I have a quiet week when I sort out and archive all the stuff I don't need (but need to keep in some form) any longer.

Yeah I just got a set of files on a dvd with that app on it. The app crashed everytime I tried to open it. I guess it's/was a bug with certain versions or something..had to open another profile on my computer other then my admin to get it to work....but it is pretty cool in the sense it kept everything split apart and stuff.
