I would like to hear opinions on these two. I cannot decide which one to buy first: neve 4081 or api 3124+?
I know that 4081 is a new kid on the block, but let's think that ams-neve is true and it's genuine 1081 pre.
So which one would you buy first and why?

"First"? So you KNOW that you're POSITIVELY getting both?
Does it really matter then if you've decided?
And here's a thought: how about an A+B test?
And is it the 4081 or 4 * 1081 you're talking about?
I've only used the 4081 in a room I hate with shitty mics, so it sucked donkey dingle. I love the 1081, but this just did nothing to me. I wouldn't buy the 4081 for half the price.
The 3124 is very nice. I just recorded drums through one for three days in a room I like, with great mics. Great drummer too.
YMMV.
Go figure.

I thought about the 4081, not four 1081.
You've mentioned that where you've used the 4081, it was a shitty room with shitty mics. Than maybe it's not the preamps fault isn't it?

Could it be that 6x2 said it that way for a reason?
Try reversing the argument for a second.

I think (though I may be reading too much into it) that 6x2 used the "preamp in a shitty room" analogy because he wanted to shine a light on the relative insignificance of the preamp itself in comparison to other prominent factors.
I also just realized (after writing another long, confused harangue) that when you asked which one I would "buy first", you actually meant "which one would I rather buy", and in my case the answer is simple - I would get the API, since I haven't tried the 4081. :D

Actually, that was my quick and very hypothetical answer based on where I stand right now.
In a real life situation, I would have to be an absolute moron to base my decision purely on what someone told me on the internet. I would borrow/rent both boxes and evaluate them for some time before deciding. I hope you will do the same.

Of course I will try them out, but actually neve postphoned the first models shipping to hungary by two months, so I thought I try to gather some information.

Yes.
But I didn't like the 4081 either - compared to the 1081 anyway.
On top of that, I thought the whole thread was a bit mad, but now that I read your last post, I get the idea! It sounded like another "I HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY, TELL ME WHAT TO BUY"-thread. Maybe I was a bit off there.
I still don't understand what you mean with the "first" bit, though. If you haven't yet tried the pres, how do you know you want both? Or either one for that matter? (And if you do have too much money, I accept both paypal and cheque! ;) )
Wait and see, don't make any decisions according to what some smartass with a number for a name says on the internet. :Coolio:

I'll just add that I've never known someone to regret buying the 3124.
It's a great piece.

No, it's not that usual I have too much money thread.
I thought ( to a degree still think) that ams-neve is a great company, so if they say the 4081 is four 1081 without the eq, than I likely to beleive that. I have heard 1081, and heard some api pres, although not the 3124+. So I decided to ask for opinions if there is someone who have used one, or both unit.
As I mentioned earlier, neve postphoned the first units shipment, so I have to wait about 2 months to try it out.
I like api pres, but neve pres generally amongst my favourites.
So the question was/is still valid as which would be my/your first choice between the two. Of course I will try both unit, even in a a/b situation if it will be possible.
Now, at least I have to different statements, yours, who didn't like the 4081 much, and another guy at another forum, who loved it very much.
Anyway thank you for your answers.

so actually what you wanna know is if the 4081 is anything like the 1081 and other neve stuff, cause if it ain't you would go for the API right now and not wait 2 months... kinda

PS. The next step is to start a new thread, in which we invite people to discredit 6x2 and the other poster (who liked the 4081), thereby reaching some kind of consensus on who has the most "reliable" personal opinion.
Next, we start yet another thread, where we try to determine which of the people speaking for or against 6x2 and the other poster, are to be trusted on their approval or disapproval.

And the last step will be that when I tried both of the pres, bought one, and from that point I need a sticky thread with a header like this: INFINITE WISDOM STARTS HERE...IF YOU HAVE DIFFERENT OPINION....Gooooooaway!

I like this idea.
After lots of useless discussion and endless arguments we vote on who's the biggest dumbass, and the one who gets less votes is declared president of the united states of america.
Oh, sorry, that was the OTHER game!

Stop thinking about "first"
You NEVER need both. Pick one you like and buy enough channels of it
