I need one.

But I think I'll wait until UA comes out with something remotely up-to-date.

PS.... I can't belive that I spelt both Fairchild and Pultec wrong in the thread title....

Isn't it possible that some engineers may not like JJP and don't want his name on their tools?

I'm confused why Waves would do this.

I would assume it's actually in part to avoid a lawsuit from UA?

Then come up with a Waves like name.

Wave-Child

Wave-Tec

Would you want a Kenny-Child?

Or a Kenny-Tec?

Then come up with a Waves like name. Probably figured they'd kill two birds with one stone: cushion themselves against a lawsuit ("You see their product is based on the Fairchild 670 at Ocean Way owned by Allen Sides, while ours is based on JJP's 670 at Ocean Way - how could there be any confusion?") and appeal to whoever JJP's name appeals to.

Would you want a Kenny-Child?

Or a Kenny-Tec?

No, but maybe I'd shell out for the Kenny Gioia Beat Detective Expansion Pack from Digidesign - hahahahhaha:lol: .

Well, I think you've kinda answered your own question. I don't think they're necessarily marketing these plugs towards working professional engineers, but rather towards hobbyists/part-timers that might go ga-ga over the relationship with JJP. After all, who wouldn't want to have access to the same gear the great JJP uses? I'm sure those plug-ins sound just like the real things

But hey, they might actually be useful, somehow, to some people. Waves probably figures that a typical legitimate pro engineer will be attracted to the plug-ins if they do indeed do what they purport to do, regardless of the association with the JJP name.

On another note, I actually watched a part of the JJP "interview" on the Waves site, and the first thing JJP says about the plug-ins is how great the graphics look. :icon_eek: He gets around to mentioning how they sound, but only after talking up the graphical interface.

Personally, no. But there may be a few ladies here who might

I hope Marlee Matlin enjoys them.

Gotta say I tried these the other day and really really liked them. Sure there is a marketing element in getting JJP's name on a product but he also has a ridiculously massive collection of interesting and desirable equipment which would be useful to have modelled.

I haven't heard his real pultecs or fairchildren but these sound very good to me, better than most of the other eqs and comps I have and for that reason I will be buying.

True, I'm no worldbeater mixer/recorder but I do it full time 7 days a week and will use these tools time and time again as they have proved more and more useful day by day.

To dismiss them out of hand as a marketing ploy is not really fair. Dave Pensado mentioned that they took 3 years working on these things.

What I will say about them is that they sound classy.

Now you don't always want class. You may want something obnoxious, or sometimes even cheap sounding. In which case look elsewhere.

wanna bet you can match the sound of the Waves Fairchild with a free Digi Comp3 plug in to the point where no one can tell, blindfolded, which is which with any repeatability?

marketing.

Is Waves going to do a hardware box or are these plug-ins only? If they would do a hardware box like their L2 rack unit they might have a sale with me. I hate screen based apps and try to keep the numbers of Windows in any given session to a minimum.

Now this is interesting. I'd bet a lot of people would not like the results of that test.

I don't see why adding a name makes them any different than what they are. His fairchild or pultecs are no different (well, no different than any fairchild is to another fairchild, ect) than the normal ones. I don't why it would KEEP anybody from using them just based on the fact that his name is associated with it. On the other hand, his name may ATTRACT people that like that guy's work.

Seems like a win/win for advertising.

Agree with WW

I've never heard a real Pultec or Fairchild in my life... So all I have is the testimony of Gearslutz posters, the recommendations of "pro" mixers, ad revenue hungry magazine reviewers and the glowing reviews of other people who have never heard or worked with the analog counterparts. Oh yea and my ears... Not a dig at anyone or the geniuses that come up with these plug's, but you can do a lot w/ stock these days.

This would be a great little learning experience if somone would do this... match a waves fairchild plug, a neve eq, ssl, api etc with standard plugs. It's still too easy to obsess about gear in the digital world rather than just doing.

'Course, whoever does so is going to totally ruin their chances of a waves endorsement.....

No two Fairchilds or Pultecs sound the same so the only valid comparison would be to the particular ones modeled and only then if the input and output terminantons were identical.
