Oh, God. :(
James...
We all joke around with this "who da man" shit. James was the man.
Rest, Mr.Brown. Your music is going to live forever.

Sad as it is, he had an amazing life and left an enduring legacy...we should all be so fortunate.
I will celebrate his life tonight by listening to some serious grooves and I will feel good.
Cheers,

Couldn't have said it better!!!
Amongst my earliest memories is JB singing "I Feel Good" on Ed Sullivan. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember him with hair dyed white (I was about six years old, so that might be a faulty memory!).
RIP, Godfather of Soul, Hardest Working Man In Show Business.

I Agree with Aardvark, he left an incredible legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. It's hard to find music that didn't draw from his era, like all the Drum and Bass bands of the 90's that heavily sampled Funky Drummer or Ain't It Funky now.
May he rest in peace!

Wow.
Stunned. Absolutely stunned.
One of those figures who has just always been THERE. Even though my av was of his low times, there was always a tremendous amount of respect for the man.
The music world has benefitted supremely from this man, and to be able to go knowing that you've left something is a fantastic way to go.
Aardy's right. James, I hope you do feel good...you deserve it.

My wife saw an amazing concert 3 years ago in march, in Washington. James was at his best that evening.
When James was at his best, nobody could touch him.
Nobody.
I'm really sad today, because he was one of the very few guys that is the reason i'm a musician today.
Never in all my life I felt like this about someone who died and that I never met in real life.
I am really sad.
It's the second post I make, and I'm not sure I won't chime in again in this thread.

He had soul ,and he was super bad (bad meaning cool in this case).
He was a pioneer in funk, and his music lives on.
I hope a new gereration, upon hearing the news of his death, check out his music to see what all the commotion is about.

All things must pass and blah blah, but that sux.
He wasn't just a musician/writer, he was a component to music. The flip side to the Beatles. To me you have, Elvis, the Beatles, Hendrix, and James Brown. That's all there is. Everything else is a variation.
Thanks James.

My first thought was that he was one of those people I had assumed would live forever, and of course his music and legacy will. But it's always a shock when someone who's made such a mark on the entire world goes unexpectedly.
I know this is a serious thread, but I think James Brown would smile at this story...
There was a girl in our little circle who was exceptionally funny all the time...similar to say, Kathy Griffin(the comedienne). She was diagnosed with cancer very young and knew she didn't have long to live. So, she put in her will that, at the end of her funeral, they would play 'Get on Up!' by James Brown.....which they did.....hehe.
She was all about good vibes, and that's how she'll be remembered by our little circle of friends. James Brown was all about good vibes, and that's how he'll be remembered by the whole world.

Eddie Murphy is hilarious, yeah, and he's got pretty good rhythm and soul and all, but man- his scream was like a tenth of a JB scream, blew the impression completely :)
Props to James Brown- I'd rather fuck up with half the energy of that man than play perfectly without it :)

A huge talent.
He always made me laugh my ass off.
Even as a young lad I found him fascinating, evocative.... and hilarious.
Conversely... he scared the shit out of my mom.
Which was a bonus.
XOXOX JB.

There was another side to James that he went out of his way to avoid publicity about.
He donated a significant percentage of his income from each show to local charities in the communities where he was performing.
The man changed people's lives.

He also is the reason Boston didn't have a riot the night Martin Luther King Jr. died. He had a show scheduled for that night, and when there was talk of shutting it down, he said hell no. That night, he talked a lot of angry people down from doing something stupid. That night in Boston, he helped keep the dream alive.
RIP JB, the music was great, and you really did help to make things better.

I think Aardy said it best.
But then he usually does.
The man left a beautiful and extensive legacy that will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
His passing is sad, but the man lived a life larger than any of us can concieve.
Godbless and Godspeed, James Brown.
so long and thanks for all the grooves...

I'm over here in Scotland for the holidays.
At christmas dinner, my girlfriend's kids, one late teens, one early twenties, were both busting out James Brown songs.
They knew a bunch of them, and all the words!
How many 70-somethings have that kind of cross-generational appeal!
Quite a legacy indeed.

Oh shit. I haven't read/heard the news until today... :(
James Brown was one of the first artists I was ever to see live in concert and although I don't remember the first time (1982) very well, it must've made an impression. The second time a decade and half ago certainly did.
Missed him last time around in Finland. Damn.
Rest in peace.
