What are your favorites below the 2k$ mark. I'm thinking of picking up a c12 style mic this year sometime as my main vocal mic (and probably bass).

I know there's the P12, what else is there?

Hands down my favorite. This is basically a Peluso if you get the one with the Peluso cap and its soe freaking cheap. You culd get two and use them for overheads as well.

Dave from Advance Audio has commented on the forum here about his mics you could do a search or call him. He would be helpful if you have any questions.

I don't have the Advanced Audio CM12 yet, but I do have the AA CM47 (Neumann U47-like) and it is a great mic. I 've used it on acoustic bass, saxohphone, kick drum with good success. I plan to get a CM12 (w/peluso cap) and another CM47. Good Mics.

Why do these mics sell for so much less than Peluso mics? Seriously, this is the first I've heard of them. No irony intended.

I have a Peluso 22-251 and it's outstanding. I've read good reviews of his C-12 knockoff but have not heard it.

They are kind of new. Dave Thomas has been recording and tweaking gear for years and in the last few years has really ramped up his mic company. Dave has figured out ways to upgrade cheaper mics and keep cost lower by elimataing things like fancy boxes and stuff like that. Instead he puts money into the actual audio, not marketing. I think that is why you probably haven't heard of them. Its kinda of the same type of word of mouth marketing that blacklion audio does. It is also the same type of marketing that my drum company does www.risendrums.com (shameless plug) that is why I spread the word on those companies when I can. Great products and prices. It takes a little longer to grow but the growth seems to be based on results not hype.

I will see if I can get Dave to come say a thing about it as well.

Hi Guys, our CM12 microphone is built into the same body as the Peluso P12. What we do is rather that build our own circuits we modify the existing circuit. This keeps the cost down and the circuit ends having more headroom than the original AKG C12. The P12 simply copies the original AKG circuits staying true to the original circuit design.

However, when we optimize the existing circuit by changing the tube, upgrading the circuit and changing the output transformer we end up with a microphone with 6db more headroom than the Neumann U47 and 3db more headroom than the original C12.

We use the Peluso cek12 which are incredibly consistent and a custom wound transformer that takes advantage of the lower output impedance of our circuit plus its wound to original Telefunken blueprints.

At the moment our microphones are made on a custom basis but by the end of summer we will have tube microphones built up ready to ship. Our CM54, CM47fet and CM87 fet microphones we can ship out with 2-3 days of an order being placed.

I will keep checking this site to see if there are anymore questions.

Best regards, www.aamicrophones.com

good stuff.....really. I happened accross them from a friend (Danderloo's old drum teacher) and they are very good mics (cost withstanding) but cost factored in makes it a no brainer. I'll let you know if I get the CM12 here soon. i'ts been on my list but I need to get these two pres first. Thanks

I've moved more into the "get a general great mic" and read a very extensive thread with some sound clips at GS. There were clips with a Wunder M(?)7, Peluso 251, and P12. The P12 sounded scooped in the sample and the 251 sounded great. The m7 also sounded wonderful but they're like what 3k? 4k? I think I may end up getting a 251 instead.

The mic I've been using for over three years (my "money" mic) has been a Soundelux u195.

The C12 style mic I've been using is a AKG C28 body with a RED/BLUE B6 head. A fantastic combination and very versatile.

My C28 is based on a 6072 tube, has a T14/1 transformer and iirc the circuit is very similar to the Tele Elam251. In fact it runs the same power supply as a C12 proper. Avoid the Nuvistor C28, which I believe is the C28c, find an "A" or "B" version.

A friend of mine has the AKG C12 knock off with the gold grill. Its and awful mic. He hates it, I hate it.... I would be careful of those mics. They did something seriously wrong with that mic.

As far as getting a 251. Yes they are cool but expensive as well. For that price you could get a few AA mics and not suffer from sound quality at all. Really you should check one out some how. They are great mics.

The only thing I can say is once you start buying gear it gets addicting. be very careful or your gonna end up with one of everything and huge credit card bills. :)

I'm not talking about an original 251, but the Peluso ones which are still semi cheap.

And I'm already in the gear lust. Have been for over four years.

Interesting. The u195 is on my get list. What do you think of it?

My mic get list as of now is:

AA CM12
Bock U195 (same as Soundelux)
Peluso 251
Lawson 2247

The u195 is really good. I use it on outside of kick and sometimes on bass guit. It's usually the vocal choice. I just want something else to go along with it. In the end I'd of course want a 47, 251 and c12 just to have some variety. I've been spending a lot of converters and preamps and shit so it's probably time I spend some money on mics.

I'm in the same boat. Time to hit the mic locker now that I have pres and converters.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Puleso and I found a wad of cash from some sessions I hadn't deposited. Just wondering, if I jacked up my price to $2500 are there some signicantly better mics I could get?

Word.

The B6 is the keeper capsule of theirs: not a huge fan of the others, but, on the right voice, that B6 gets a LOT of use.

Not sure of the other "C12" clones - not heard them, but it does seem the Peluso capsules are being used in more and more current boutique mics.

Times are good for hi quality mics nowadays - nice to see Dave (AA) ramping up production...

I've had a soundeluxe U195 for a couple years now and think it's a great mic for the money.

This one also uses a C12 capsule, maybe something to consider. :D

Wow,

Have you used DeGeer's mics Otek?

If so, is it hella good?

I've heard nothing but talk re: this mic, and I'm always intrigued by strange mics made by social misfits (as I've heard the dude is quite a wild card!)

thx,

I haven't recorded with it myself, but I have mixed tracks which were partially recorded with it.

Naturally, it's hard to form an opinion not knowing what the source was like and having some reference to gauge it by, but the tracks recorded with the DeGeer always sounded very impressive. I think "big" is a word that describes it better than anything.

Well, the reason it's mostly talk and very little actual user discussion is probably due to there being less than 30 of these mics in existence.

As for Didrik himself, I don't know him personally, and I'm very particular about forming my own opinion of people.

A luthier friend of mine made a couple of guitar prototypes for a well-known Swedish metal band some years ago, and the amount of hype, assumptions and downright falsehood surrounding his work on the internet since, is quite appalling.

Understood.

Would love to hear his mics someday...

Best,
