Subject says it all.

Notes say that it's supposed to fix performance problems relating to Airport and Logic, although it does befuddle me as to why anyone would even want to be running an Airport network while Logic is running.

Let's throw this shit to the wall and see if it sticks...

It stuck here. Reason why you want airport is because Logic 8 does sync up the preferences to .Mac while it runs. You may also want to download something while Logic is running, killing airport should not be required to work, your system should stay as is when using any application.

Hum I did some testing last night, particularly with BFD, with 10.5.4 I am able to set my sample rate at 88.2 and buffer at 32 and I see 2 CPUs being used and neither goes over 20%. WTF?

I noticed very low CPU usage with Logic overall including the usage with BFD2 as well. If I can get Logic down to 32 with BFD2 full on (FX and all), I'm definitely going to shit myself silly.

I'm definitely going to shit myself silly. This implies that it might be possible to shit oneself whilst maintaining one's composure. Sir, if you are able to carry yourself with dignity and respect after shitting yourself, then you are a better man than I and I salute you.

Trust me... I can't even maintain my composure even without shitting myself. So you're already a better person than I am.

However, I am using Logic 8 with 10.5.4 with a I/O Buffer rate of 32 and a sample rate of 88.2 at the moment and it is so freakin' awesome. The cores are hardly flinching, and I have been loading on the other instruments, reverbs and whatever.

I have never gotten Logic and BFD2 to work this good before!

Well... it was good while it lasted. Logic just took a major crash blaming BFD2 and now I can't seem to get back that I/O rate of 32 again, at least without it taking a shit all over the place.

At least I managed to track a guitar and two vocal tracks with it before it all went to hell.

well my mac seems to have crashed more with 10.5.4 in the last few days than with 10.5.3...

I reckon it's a conspiracy theory - gradually make OSX more and more unstable - rivalling windows - so that when the new 'OSX Snowleopard' arrives - bringing with it 'no new features but greater stability' - we will jump at the chance to pay through our noses for it!

Jord,

I had the same crash but you reported it already. Running OnyX shakes out the stuck core for me. I hope it does for you too.

I installed it yesterday. So far, so good.

OnyX worked for me as well. However, I was only able to use it at 32 with BFD2 for one song. As soon as I switched to another song, I couldn't use 32 with BFD2 for that session.

I did have an idea, however, and that was to freeze BFD2's track and see if I can track at 32 while BFD2 is frozen. Then when I am ready to do my mixdowns, unfreeze BFD2 and use 1024 (as I always do) for my mixdowns and audio exports.

Worth the experiment...

I tried the multi song thing and it works for me, I can go from song to song and not have the core choke, I wonder if it's something specific to your setup.

I probably wouldn't rule that out either, as I did start pushing it hard with a few more plug-ins and whatever. But the fact that it sounded good beforehand and crap after the switch indicates that something is wrong somewhere. It only becomes evident when BFD2 comes into play. Either it is a cause or a catalyst.

Oh I see, see I don't use plugs at 32, never do that's too much. I track with nothing in, then I shift up to 1024 and go balls out on everything.

gonna go do a big pile of maintenance now and see if i can stop it happening

Nope, haven't had anything similar David.
Do these updates overwrite old data or just take up more space on the HD?

Thanks

As a result of these discussions, I haven't allowed Apple to push 10.5.4 to my workstation yet. But God knows, it sure wants to.

Having just downloaded OnyX, are there any features I should be careful to tweak, if and when I do allow the OS download and install?

i did some basic maintenance yesterday (onyx, etc) and things seem a little better now. so far, so good.

on a weird note though......today my laptop turned itself on. no idea why (its not scheduled to turn itself on or off or anything, ever). i was just laying there in bed, then i hear the chime and see my monitor come to life on the login window. strange.....

One suggestion...

Leave the house, they don't want you there.

Fulcrum, there is no features to turn on and off really, well you can but not to make things run better. What I found to work really well after 10.5.4 is to run OnyX and make it clear all the caches, including the kernel cache. It will remove old files, including files used for memory management etc, and reboot your machine. That's it. Works like a champ after that.

Didn't get to it. The filing attacked me last night. Will report back when I initiate the push.

Seriously David, run OnyX and clear out all caches. It does wonders. Something in 10.5.3 didn't go right, and I think as part of 10.5.4 it was quietly fixed, and I think that in 10.5.3 it may have corrupted some caches and removing them seems to really push things in the right direction.

As a final recommendation, but a bit more time consuming, I would download the combo install for 10.5.4 from Apple's site and install that on top of your current 10.5.4. Sometimes the delta update which is what the software update uses, doesn't do things right.

10.5.4 on a quad MacPro here has been real stable and a lot of fun to use. I realized this weekend that for once I was in Logic working thinking about my music, not about some error on screen or poor performance of some kind.
