I know, I know, patchbays are boring, but...any opinions on this thang...
NYS-SPP-L1 (http://www.neutrik.com/fl/en/audio/210_460038209/NYS-SPP-L1_detail.aspx)
...or a reasonable alternative? I just need something basic (OK, and cheap) - no need to go the TT route yet (IMHO - I'm 90% ITB). And I've grown a little wary of Ebay. Thanks!

I have a couple and they've been bullet proof for me.

I have 2. Work well.
main downfall is that you need more plugs as the rear is not hard wired.

I have a pair too, but there will not be a third since I have bought Samson S-Patch Plus. Samson is much much better if you ask me. If I could exchange those Neutriks for more S-Patches, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Thanks folks. I hadn't even run across the Samson, but it seems that the switches might be a bit safer than flipping the cards in the Neutrik to change normals. I guess either one would be fine for my purposes. Do you think they are both sonically "neutral" (like I have the hearing of a bat anyway...)?
Jeez...I think I'm excited about buying a patchbay...:Uh oh:

I don't know what you're talking about. Unfortunately I don't have such audiophile superstitions some folk seem to sport (and religiously support).
I mean... It's a patchbay forgoddssake. A pile of chips of frikkin' brass. I don't think that you can expect a whole world of difference from a $100 rectangular tin tube with a pile of extruded brass contacts tucked in. Eheh...

i have 2.
good points:
- cheap
- simple
- readily available
- so far no dead points
- not behringer
bad points:
- pain in the ass to get the prick back together after flipping cards
- flimsy as shit. too much front to back movement, plugging shit in always feels like somethings gonna break. you would not believe how much you have to force shit sometimes

Ok, I can't seem to find a clear cut answer to this anywhere, and yes, it's a dumb question I'm sure...
Can mics that require phantom power be connected using unbalanced connections? For instance, I have a female XLR to 1/4 TS snake that I can use to patch into the back of the Neutrik...will it carry phantom power without doing any harm?

It will, but due to the nature of TRS plugs, you will have to turn off the phantom power when pluging in and out. Othervice could be bad business for your mic.

So what you are saying is that I CAN use TS (not TRS) plugs, but due to when pulling them out, TS on the cable will make contact with RS on the patchbay, so cut phantom power when pulling patches?
I think that is what you mean. I'm always anal about pulling mic connections with phantom on anyway, so that won't be a problem.
Thanks! :D:D:D

I'm saying, that you fuck stuff up with pulling jack plugs with phantom on. And you don't want to use TS plugs for your microphone anyway - and even less with phantom power involved.

Phantom Power needs both the hot and cold wire.
So you need to use TRS plugs.
If you plug a TRS you will shorten the phantom power and that can fuck with the desk and the mic.
The capsule will pop and that is not a good thing for it (even worse for ribbon mics).

Keep +48V OFF your patch bay, it is a recipe for an unwanted accident. Rather use a 19" XLR panel and feed the mic pres from that, take the outputs to the patchbay... simple/flexible.

yeah, i think its smarter to keep phantom on bays that physically need a different connection to avoid accidents.

It also can get you into contact problems in the patchbay.
