I usually do only mixing, but recently i got a tascam us-112l tnt pack, which comes with a condenser mic, stand, and xlr cable.

Ive been playing around with it a bit, trying to get a bit used to recording, so im kinda wondering about something.

If down the road I get a mixing board, if it has MIDI out on the mixer, would i be able to connect that to my interface and do full multitrack recording using my DAW or is there some other way id have to hook it up to do that?

Hi there,

I usually do only mixing, but recently i got a tascam us-112l tnt pack, which comes with a condenser mic, stand, and xlr cable.

Ive been playing around with it a bit, trying to get a bit used to recording, so im kinda wondering about something.

MIDI is not transmitting audio. It's a standard for exchanging controller/note/velocity/volume etc. data between devices which support that format, for instance between a keyboard and a virtual instrument within a DAW. The audio is produced by the virtual instrument, but the data which note it should play/at which velocity/which sound etc. comes via MIDI from the keyboard. Another example would be DAW-Controllers, which on every fader/knob move send data in MIDI-format to the application and can control the mixer section for example.

So...no, you wouldn't be able to transmit multichannel audio information via MIDI into your interface into your DAW. You could use the mixer board for multiple inputs, do a decent pre-mix and send that through the outs of the mixer into the 2 ins of your interface and into your DAW. Is that useful ? :Roll eyes: Don't know...maybe not.

For fun with multiple tracking I guess there's no way around either to get a mixing board with integrated interface to connect to the DAW or to get a seperate interface which can handle mutiple inputs coming from what mixer ever.

Hope this is somewhat helpful,

best,

Marco

ok thx marco, thats what i wanted to know...i figured id have to do it only 2 tracks at a time and such, just hoped there was another way.

Guess Ill just have to upgrade when the time comes that i can afford to do so. Thats fine though, at least it gives me a little tracking experience.
