my audio interface has only firewire 400 out but my new laptop has the smaller version firewire connection. Is it possible to buy a lead which is firewire 400 into the smaller firewire connection.

The plugs are identical in the amount of data they transmit, the only difference is the smaller one does not provide buss power. You can get an adapter like Knastratt suggested or you can get a cable that goes (big) to (small) for lack of a better description. You'll need to power your interface with a power cord though. Making it harder to be truly mobile "record anywhere etc".
No biggie though I use my stock sound card w/ ASIO 4ALL at 96K 3.2 ms of delay in Nunedo -> (Phenomenal free drivers) and use my FF400 when I'm stationary and recording.
