    Default Instrumental. Ideas?

I recorded this the other night while it was raining. Acoustic guitar only right now. Obviously the doubling could be played a lot tighter. Don't mind the car that drives by during the bridge.

Anyway, I'm just looking for ideas on how I might develope this a bit more. I wrote it a long time ago and I've kind of hung on to it because I like the weird modulation it has going from major to minor.

Why would you want to make the double acoustic tighter? I would base your entire song and production on what you have here, without rerecording either of those acoustic guitars.

    Do you have lyrics?

Yeah, it's a frog (or maybe a toad? i dunno). That and the sound of the rain and a gutter dripping. I was hearing it while I was playing. I thought it sounded nice so I opened up the back door and recorded a few minutes of it. I'll try making it louder and verby-er.

I hear a big verby clarinet
You know, I can imagine that very easily too. Trouble is I've never even touched a clarinet. I've got some synths but no controller yet so it would be hunt-and-peck midi editing if I attempted anything. Congas would be cool.

I thought the doubling and the playing was a bit sloppy. I wasn't really paying much attention when I played it. Maybe that's a good thing?
Lyrics? Ah, no I never attempt that sort of thing myself. It would just turn into complete cheese I'm afraid.

Thanks for the quick responses and the compliments, guys. I really appreciate it.

Is there a click track like maybe a shaker in there, or is that rain from the gutter? If possible, I would remove that tempo because while it plays nicely from time to time as offbeats to your guitar rhythm, other times it conflicts rhythmically.

If it's a click, kill it. (I'm pretty sure it's rain dripping though.)

I don't think the doubled guitars need to be any tighter either in this case. You have a good vibe going on. On one pair of my monitors, there were a couple strong hits on the lower strings that many folks with greater mixing skill would probably be better to handle, but I'd probably just roll off some of the low end in eq to handle. (better suggestions welcome!!!!)

For additions, I heard vibraphone for measures 5-8 (mapped by guitar coming in on measure "one"), then vocals on 9, then back to vibes and perhaps a secondary layer of your choice (clarinet, oboe, strings?) before a second verse. After that, I'd have to give it more thought for any useful suggestions. Generally, I'd leave it sparse instrumentally to give your nice guitar tracks room to breathe.

It's not a click, it's the rain dripping from the gutter. I went to great lengths to keep the click out of the guitar tracks (pulled my hoody up over the 'phones. damn K240's).

I actually kind of like the way the drip goes in and out of time. I could beat detective the rain but I think it would mess with the frog's performance.

I guess I'm keeping these guitar tracks so I'll have to give a closer listen to the low end. Haven't really messed with it besides turning on the mic's high pass.

I really like the vibraphone idea.

Yes, and we all know what prima-donna frogs can be, so good call.

I'm happy to mock my vibraphone and maybe even lyrical/melodic concept if you like (vibes would be samples though as I don't have a real vibraphone around). It'd be a simple melodic line I'd recommend mixing low because I think your guitar work should be the focus. I think the texture would compliment however.

[edit]: had to follow up on the raindrop that sounds like a click. I think it works for you 40% of the time, but I maintain it works against you other places in the tune and distracts from your vibe.
FWIW. Even though I dig the ambiance, perhaps lowering in the mix or eq-ing that (mostly) out would do it. Opinions served with grain of salt. (I can put your name on the grain of salt for only $10 extra.)

If you'd like to take a crack at a vibraphone part I'd be more than happy to hear it.

I hear you on the raindrip, but hey 40% ain't bad! I'll see what I can do to make it less obtrusive, as I would like to bring the overall level of the rain track up like Potts was saying.

    Ok ML,

give me a day or so.

I'll work a few ideas into a mockup and you can go from there.
    (Or dismiss everything).

I'll probably get smacked by the more pedigreed here for saying it, but I'd LOWER rather than raise the rain sounds, and I'd spread them wide across the stereo spread to give room for the guitars and whatever other instruments you choose to use. I'd even be so bold as to drop some of their low end in eq, and delay or verb them for distance. Don't get me wrong, I like the ambience much, I just have the opinion that a little bit goes a long ways in this case.

Note however: I have no shiny round objects framed with captions on my walls, so again, there's that grain of salt/sand/whathaveyou.

    ML,

you know, after a few more listens, I came around and agree with you and Potts... a little more of that ambient track would serve nicely. More later.

Here's some flugel melody on top of the beautiful song. Sorry if you hear young girls crying in the back ground. I was watching my two daughters, age 1 and 4, and I think Dora was over.

Wow. Tptman, I am flattered you would take the time to do that. You have a very good ear.

The bridge especially put a big smile on my face.

Please pardon me for taking a crack at an acoustic bass part, but I couldn't resist. Skipped the bridge for the time being because I have to get my baby's lunch made. But here's some of the rest. Again, don't want to step on toes, but this is a beautiful piece.

    Wow.

    Wow to tptman.
    Wow to QweziRider.

I really like what you guys did.

I took a different approach and as promised, added some sample vibraphone and some sample strings. Left the arrangement sparse as indicated earlier as well because I think ML is saying a lot with the guitar track. That said, some of the stuff tptman threw down was brilliant, and serious props to QweziRider for a beautiful bass track. If I had my druthers, I'd have added some of tpt and Qwezi in my version as well. Good stuff.

Couldn't spend much time on this during the work week, but here's a different take on the track.

Well, we've almost got our unofficial cape tune done. Shall we submit the raw tracks to Mixerman and get the mix finished?

    :-)

What a cool site. Only in the womb could something like this happen.
