What really sped my system up, though, was having that Trojan destroy my filesystem three weeks ago and having to reinstall Snow Leopard (and then the .8 patch) because Time Machine miraculously couldn't find any valid system backups on my Time Machine drive. Next step: disk cloning...
You one of the 140K affected by FlashBack? Gotta stay clear from them porn sites, unless you're writing songs about 'em.

I have a few BU hard drives that I use, including an NAS for current projects (for music, photography and app development). I'm at the point where I'm probably going to pick up a bunch of OEM drives from Tiger Direct along with a HD toaster dock so I can pop 'em in and out as needed.

A trojan destroyed your file system?! On OS X?
Yeah, Jord identified the one I gotóbut not the reason I got it, ha and ha.

I still don't know where it came from. I was getting the beach ball more and more frequently, and for longer stretches of time, when I finally booted from DVD and had a look at the disk with Disk Utility I saw that it was eating the file system nodes. Repair was unsuccessful; I had no choice but to wipe it clean.

I spotted this and as I can add something useful I will. I purchased an "Integral SATA HD copy station". Very useful once you have a happily working system drive going. Just clone the hardware and be back to work in the time it takes to swap a drive if it breaks (and one day it will) it's £35.00 in UK so around $60.00 I guess. You just need a spare SATA drive to clone.

if time machine proves unreliable... I'm pretty lucky I didn't have any system drive failure, since I use is as sole backup for my main drive.

Audio drive has its own 3-backup (day/ week/ month) sop but still... scary.
