    Default The Vocalist is Rushing!!!

    Title says it all.

Singer is in a world of their own. Dancing around the beat like a teenage dweeb on prom night.

Three ways I could fix this issue.

    Record it again....and again.

Fix the vocal with alsihod alchemy later.

    Or.

Nudge the band around to match the vocalist?

That last one might not be the answer...but I thought I'd put it out there.

    Thanks

If the performance sucks, just do another take. If the performance is solid but there's a few spots bothering you, then you can consider nudging them around, but if the singer is consistently off-beat, odds are the performance is just not worth salvaging.

Nudging the band to fit the vocals sounds rather insane to me.

You and your little friend need to have a conversation with the vocalist.

    Meet your little friend.

You could sing it with the phrasing you're looking for and then vocalign their performance to yours.

I've thought about it. Thanks for reminding me.

Sometimes you can be just plain WRONG about this stuff.

Maybe it doesn't NEED to be fixed.

As T.Bay suggested, (I guess you're producing those tracks?) is there anything remotely cool/naive about his feel that could be thought of as a feature instead of a defect? (A kind of naive vocal delivery is a factor that can sometimes contribute to give an act a "novelty" feel.)

Otherwise it's time to rehearse the singer and give him homeworks &/or have them play a couple gigs to solidify the tracks once everything's in place.

(Might have been better to do this before coming to the studio but better now than never.)

That's something we can't tell without hearing the song... maybe even after hearing it

Someone please align the lead vocal on this? It's all over the map!

Damn Nobby, you beat me to it!

Some of the best vocalists were "just rushing" a wee bit, which made it all the more fascinating.

Unless it sounds very wrong, there's always the option of using it to your advantage.

Perhaps the vocalist means to rush.

All those times when I've recorded drummers who play behind the beat because they intended to.. if I demanded they played on the beat or fixed it in the DAW I'd have killed every great moment.

While I realize that there are moments where the vocalist natural rushing/dragging can enhance a song.

I think this is a situation where rushing just makes the band sound off beat. Especially considering that there are moments where the vocalist is in the pocket.

initially i hesitated about posting the song...but I did. It's a work in progress.

    Guess who the singer is!

"novelty" isn't the goal. If Rebecca Black is the prime example of novelty.

Singer does rehearse. But little things seem to get bigger when you put them under a microscope.

It feels like the band is dragging here and there and she is trying to propel the song forward,to no avail.

Perhaps she has the vibe and they don't,when you slow a song down from it's original and intended speed,it can be harder to adapt vocally, but they find common ground every now and then, as the band gets busier in some parts she seems to respond and they are all back on the money.

I think the song needs to speed up a touch and every thing will sort itself out,a little late for that i'm guessing.

I don't really hear anything wrong with the vocal at all. The band lags a bit in a couple of places but on the whole it's fine.

And she doesn't sound Russian at all.....

It all started from a guitar demo, acoustic + clicktrack

Kept the same tempo from day one.

I'm thinkin some of what's throwing me off is all in the girls attitude...and sometimes a lack thereof. Too rigid, unwilling to break loose, always trying to blend.

Anyway, how are the drums? Kita said they sounded cloudy when I sent him an older cut of the WIP mix

Hey man, it sounds nice.. I don't hear her rushing.. The band isn't dragging enough to bother me..

One suggestion I have is to lose the big verb on the kit.. Maybe lose it on everything on the verses, and use it on the choruses..

I would ride the kit for the stick across rim verses up a bit, too.. Maybe even brighten it..

    Sounds nice man.

    BOOM!!

I agree the big reversed arena verb is annoying in the verses. But I really like what it does for that breakdown at the end...just that little touch of extra rumble-y-ness.

    I'll underdub that later.

    Sounds nice man.
    BOOM!!
    Thanks.

Still got a lot of ideas to try on this song. Hopefully I can get it from my head to pro-tools without making a mess of things.
