I did tell you about the original Rogers at Motown that some of the producers wouldn't let us touch after the drummer died. In desperation, we finally bought two new sets of Gretsch and a useless set of jumbo Ludwigs so we could get a decent sound with fresh ambassadors. (This was back in the daze when one never let on to the boss that the new gizmo you'd just talked him into buying had turned out to be a P.O.S.)

Back then part of being a recording engineer was tuning and rebuilding drums.

9 out of 10 drummers that I record can't tune, I guess that holds true until today.

I wonder why drumhead manufacturers don't make different collar shapes for all the different edge profiles out there. I'll wait for my crimped remos and report back!

Remo Heads and GM vehicles must be coming out of the same factory nowadays.

    How'd you get on?

I got a new Gretsch Rn-1 a month ago. Sounds great but, I'm having the problem you described getting heads seated.

Today I got out all my used drum heads - around 5 different heads per drum to try - in a bid to get the bottom of the problem. All these I've used on my old yamaha without issue. However I'm none the wiser as to what to do with the gretsch

Nothing besides the reso heads that came with the kit (gretsch logo made by remo) will be seated without a fight

I guess I've got a few options most of which involve ringing the shop from whence the kit came to either change it out or take it in and experiment with all the heads they have...
Shoulda saved that for my therapist

The crimped dw remos fit perfectly - they have a much wider flat area, so the collar is steeper. However, they don't have the same tone of coated ambassadors (which have a certain "sandy" attack to them from the coating. Dw's is less grainy). I wished they made coated ambassadors crimp-sytle!
Certainly like the dw's as clear bottom heads. Easier to tune than the clear ambassador equivalent. Same same but not different (in that role).

That said, I found that my set has seated itself (or however you might call it) over the last year. It's now much easier to fit the heads. Had a chat with garrison from dw about it and he thought it might be some wood-tension thing that can happen after you ship a set from SoCal to snowy Switzerland. All sets have some sort of "aging", don't they?

    Cheers for the update Frank!

I was using coated Ambassadors today, haven't tried any Evan's or Aquarian on these drums.

Will have a chat with the people at the shop tomorrow see what they reckon.
