Default a little mic shoot out

so, just a quick mic shoot out from a session the other day. Maybe fun to post i thought.

so, here are 4 dynamic mics on the same amp, directly on the cone.
(placement chosen for ease during shoot out, placement varied during actual tracking)

different performances as well as different mics, so i did my best to make them all the same volume.

I wont tell you what they are yet. Just pick one.
There are no wrong answers here, i think any of them could be made to work.

    Well - I'm not Weedy.

I also liked #4. Was that the Philips early 70's tape cassette recorder mic with the on/off button?

It's just as well; you both wouldn't fit in his pants at the same time.

I doubt I'd fit in his pants alone. But stop it - I'm getting all excited.

I really like #2. I suspect that 1 or 4 is the SM57 but I've not got enough experience to be sure.

The funny thing is, any one of those could work, or sound completely wrong. It's all about context.

But FWIW - for bottom octave, 3D and paucity of fizz, I'll pick #1.

Regarding the methodology I'm severly inclined to ponder I'm judging position more than mic itself. Not that it matters, though. And, yeah - they'd all work with some industrial grade Crisco and an ample sized shoe horn.

Mic positions are all the same. Center cone on the grill. Performances are (clearly) different though.

I agree completely, any of these would be fine, if that's what you like. I was kind of hung between 2 (for different reasons) but the client had a clear preference, so that's the direction we went in.

This was cool giraffe. I went #4. There was something more direct or present about it to me. But it took me a while to settle on it.

I like these things where I get to compare what I heard with what you guys are hearing. It's like little mini lessons.

I've picked up a couple of new mics recently and my new little room for recording things loudly is 90% finished.
So I set up in there last night and did the same thing with 5 different mics I have. Played over a drum loop, so I could listen to the guitar only and the guitar with something else.

Would I be alright posting something so similar, or does that start getting annoying to everyone? haha.

That's up to you man. If it's a similar shoot out, it might feel redundant. If it's something different though, it might be informative/fun.

Well. I was hoping for a few more replies, but the womb so.....
    Anyway,
    1: beyer m88
    2: sure sm7b
    3: beyer m69
    4: sure sm57

We went with the m88, but I could see a case for any of them in the right context, really.
The 57 was my least favorite, but even that would be fine if that's what I had to use.

The m69 is a little uncommon in these things, it consistently has a scooped sound and a nice sounding top. Really good, in its way, though it very rarely beats out the m88 on guitar cab here.

Ha! Should have known. I do use the M88 a lot for this particular task, so I guess that played into my picking it. Probably that bottom end girth that the M88 has.

But again, context is everything. I might have picked something else when drums and bass was added in.
