    Default MiX iT! 2a – Q&A

    MiX iT! 2 Update

It is now time for everyone to pick the THREE mixes you would like to discuss in depth.

Please visit the Pick 3 Mixes thread to nominate your mix picks.

The mixing phase is now closed + the discussion phase has begun.

    Please visit
the Post It thread to listen to the possibly 98 (!!!) mixes.

    And visit the
Discuss It: Part 1 thread to discuss them.

Please post all non mix discussion questions in this thread. Thx!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi everyone,

We're close to starting up MiX iT! 2. And we want to take the experience we gathered in MiX iT! 1 and continue to build on that in the upcoming round.

Charles and I have been brainstorming on possible formulas for the future and if one thing ... there is no lack of ideas to keep these Mixing Events going for quite a few rounds to come.

Now for this next round we were thinking something in the lines of this :

    The Interactive MiX iT

    Interactive you say ?

    Yes ... interactive ...

Basically most of the format used in MiX iT! 1 will stay the same. Please visit the MiX iT! Global Mixing Event introduction thread for details on the format.

    - There will be a song submissions phase in which people can submit songs to be mixed by the MiX iT! 2 participants.

    - Once the song is chosen the participants MIX the song and submit their MIX. (this time around the use of samples will be allowed btw)

Now ... from here on we want to change the original scenario a bit.

    - Once the Mixes are all uploaded, along with each mixers description of how they did their mix, we want to do a poll and depending on the result of that poll, we will then choose 3 Mixes. These 3 mixes will from that point on be the subject for the discussion rounds and that is the point where we want to go interactive.

    We're thinking :

    - in depth look on how the mixes were done through session files / pictures / sharing and explaining why certain settings where used etc etc ...

    - educational and constructive discussions on the why's & how's of these voted Mixes.

    - The possibility to try those out in the 'recall it' phase

    etc ....

Basically we are hoping that by choosing a few stunning mixes with very different takes on the same song, and providing the possibility to find out how exactly these mixes were born and raised, we can provide an even better educational value to these events.

Additionally, we will be keeping all the MiX iT! threads in a dedicated forum.

You are herewith all invited to share your opinion on this.

    Thanks,

    Charles & Chris

    sounds very interesting.
the "3 mixes in depth" phase especially might turn out to be very educational.

hopefully i have time to participate... although i already know i wont have access to my set up for the 3 weeks following xmas

May I issue a petition for Charles to do a mix for Mixerman's mix to be included in "in depth" phase immediately?

Maybe I am just tirred and don't get it right now, but this "picking 3 mixes" thing, will that not be a problem with people mixing analog and people mixing on non-standard platforms. I mean sharing session files will not be that easy.

If ya can't do this 1 cuza CAPE, they'll always be the next MiX iT!

Plus, we gotta go thru the song submission phase, so the mixing won't be for a few weeks yet.

That's a good change. I couldn't participate in the last one knowing
that I'd have to listen to (that's the easy part) and comment on
(that's the time intense part) about one zillion mixes.

This makes it much easier to integrate it into the daily schedule

But to vote in for that 3 mixes you actually better to hear all of them in the first place, right? I think the idea with a poll is a good/bad type of thing. Going in depth with the best mixes is good, but being able to discuss each mix is also nice, as also possibility to point obvious mistakes.

Going in depth with the best mixes is good,
I wouldn't necessarily vote for the 'best' mix.
Maybe for a mix that has vocals I'd like to reproduce.
Or the one with the most room for improvements.
Or one which shines in something I was struggling with.

Well, we could also have a thread dedicated to discuss all the non-chosen mixes.

But still have the main focus on the threads discussing the 3 primary mixes.

We're not trying to discourage discussion. We're just trying to make the event more focussed.

And Brendo, we agree, the last round kinda dragged on for too long, especially the discussion phase. That's why we've made this change.

Good idea. The second biggest problem I personally had with the initial round (the first being I was foolish enough to miss it) was that with so many mixes it was pretty much impossible to keep track of who did what where. So a small subset will make it much easier to analyze the techniques and actually learn something.

I agree. With the added "recall" too, I was just tired of that song. It's not a real world scenario. I did learn a lot, however. I was able to ask questions to the person who's mix I liked the most and find out what he did by downloading the session.

It also seemed like a lot of people were interested in feedback but were not willing to give it. I believe ChrisJ and i were the only one's who reviewed everyone's mixes in depth. Out of the 70 odd people who participate, I received feedback from maybe 4 people. I wanted the feedback so I could improve my skills.

I'm still going to be involved in this new one even though I don't agree with the length of it. I can't wait to get started and learn some more!
