What are you using to decode the files? Are you definitely using the most recent version of FLAC?
I'm using the Mac one linked in the instructions - xAct1.62.
You can hear some of my work at http://www.thedubnicks.com - feedback appreciated!

I've been using dbpoweramp to encode/decode for years. As a test I decoded one of the bass tracks with the FLAC one that Charles posted and decoded the same track with dbpoweramp then played them at the same time with one phase fliped and I had silence for the entire song, so atleast decoded from FLAC to wav was the same. I might play with so encoding/decoding and see if I'm losing any info. dbpoweramp is cool because you can grab codecs for just about anything and it's pretty light weight. You can covert files from the explorer menu with a right click too.

Try Max (http://sbooth.org/Max/) instead, see if that does the trick.

If that doesn't work, then the official FLAC package for Mac damn well should; http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

Edit: Just looked closer at the package on that last link, seems the latest version of FLAC tools for Mac is 1.1.4. We need 1.2+ I think. I'll keep looking...

Max seems to decode the files ok, but I think there's a glitch in ov1 at around 2:12. The file is also slightly smaller than the rest (33.9mb as opposed to 34.7mb)

That file blew up for me (aborted decode) under 1.1.2 (ships with slackware) at about the 49% point.
Metadata indicated it was encoded with 1.2.1, so I upgraded and it finished, finally.
Here are the file sizes I got, sorted by size:
    35529 seniorbasscon.wav
    35529 seniorbassdi.wav
    35529 seniorbasssm57.wav
    35529 seniorguitdaz1.wav
    35529 seniorguitdaz2.wav
    35529 seniorguitdaz3.wav
    35529 seniorguitmike1.wav
    35529 seniorguitmike2.wav
    35529 seniorkeys1.wav
    35529 seniorkeys2.wav
    35529 seniorsynth.wav
    35529 seniorvioloin.wav
    35529 seniorvox.wav
    35529 seniorvox1.wav
    35529 seniorvox2.wav
    35481 seniorkick.wav
    35481 seniorov2.wav
    35481 seniortom.wav
    34695 seniorov1.wav
    34695 seniorsnare.wav

    dunno if that helps..

Alright, looks like we might just upload ov1 as a wav for you guys... is that the only problem one?

Yep, the "Con" stands for condensor

Overheads were miked XY in front of the kit (although not with the snare in the centre of the image unfortunately).
"Yep there are delays and also an old 910 harmoniser on the snare on that album, with the feedback turned up and pitched down to give some length to the snare on BIB. Pretty standard trick in them olden days" - Mike Shipley

Thanks for that bit of insight.
It helps me visualize the actual layout much better.
BTW, is that song a cover?
It sounds mighty familiar.. especially the repeating guitar/synth riff.

Are we allowed to upload our session files using .rar instead of .zip? I've noticed that using .rar compresses better than .zip.

The FLAC decoding? or The OH file?

    Okay, I'm totally confused.

How do I convert the FLAC into WAV? I installed Winamp, so I can listen to the FLACking things directly, but how do I decode to wav?

Go here and you should find what you're looking for.
I'd advise nabbing one of the versions towards the top of the page (not under the extras section) as they'll be up-to-date with the flac version used to compress the files.
And, as always, remember to RTFM
    [edit]
also, you could grab a file writer plugin for winamp, and use that to 'play back' directly to a file.

    Neither, really.
The issue seems to be with the fact that the files were compressed using the latest rev (1.2.1) of FLAC and some earlier revs choke on the OH1 file.
Perhaps Knightsy's offer of posting the raw wav file will solve that problem for those people that for whatever reason cannot get to the latest revision?

So, why not just get the latest version of FLAC then?

I'm really not understanding the problem.

It's kinda my fault. I sorta assumed every1 was already familiar with FLAC + didn't really explain it very well.

FLAC is data compression software specifically designed for audio. It's lossless, meaning that the file comes back identical to the original source file. No loss in quality. (Unlike mp3 or AAC.) And it gets used a lot for transmitting files over the net in online collaboration like CAPE.

In the 1st post of this thread there are two links to FLAC encoding/decoding applications. There are many applications out there that can do this, but I only wanted to recommend ones that I or one of the mods here have 1st hand experience with, and have confidence in their reliability. The two we recommended should decode the files perfectly.

If any of you are having problems with the app you are using to decode the FLAC files, then please download one of these two apps:

    Windows: FLAC for Windows 1.21b
(Note for Vista users: if the installer is getting stuck, try this workaround)
    Mac: xACT 1.62

    This should solve your problems.

I'm hearing it post extraction to Wav. Maybe I'll re-extract just the overheads again - I was putzing around with the tracks in a hurry last night before I had to go somewhere and a lot of that time I just had the first few bars/w drums looping, so it's very possible that it only happens that once - in the first few bars of the drums, correct?
I just listened to both overheads + didn't hear a dropout. I'm not sayin it ain't there, but I can't seem to find it. And the files I'm listening to are from the same zip that everyone downloaded, and then converted from FLAC to WAV with xACT.

To track this down, let's get super-specific...

    1. What's the name of the file or files you are hearing the problem in?

    2. Exactly where in the timeline is the problem?

    3. Please describe exactly what the problem is.

I'd like to get this sorted ASAP, so we can focus on mixing.

    Thanx!

Ok, all looks good here. Decoded with xACT, bunged all the files into Ardour and the drum tracks are different lengths but it all lines up fine.

Whatever you decode the files with, make sure it's at least FLAC 1.2.0 or higher. xACT 1.62 meets this requirement.

Can I suggest using Wavpack instead of FLAC in the future for distributing the multitracks? It has a much more stable 24-bit implementation and xACT will encode/decode these as well.

WavPack has been suggested by others. We're thinking about that for next time.

These files are 16 bit, and they should be bit for bit identical to the original WAV files.

Every tool I've got here is telling me they're 24 bit. Versions of FLAC prior to 1.2.0 have known issues with 24 bit files.

If you're on a Mac use the version of xACT Charles linked to. If you're on Windows, make sure you grab the latest version of the Windows FLAC tools from the other link. Make sure you're using version 1.2.0 or above.
