thanks, i'll try that next time. I usually go through 5 different reverb units and lots of big settings and none usually sound right, maybe I'm just jinxed 'cos I know it ought to be simple...

I wanted to hate this mix. Drum samples on this track?! But really... it's exciting. It's interesting. I dig it. It's a totally different vibe. It sounds like we all, Kenny included, agree that it's not right for the song, but it's really cool to hear this super-slick take on it.

It's funny. The longer you work on something, the harder it is to get it right sometimes. It's like, I spent an hour trying to get this effect and I'm not going to settle for it being "almost" right.

I've found, the best sounds happen quickly and naturally although it's more like "luckily".

Thanks. Although, I would call it just "slick".

You'd probably hate "super slick" in my world.

At first listen I really did not like the kick and snare choice either. Kick grew on me, but it sounded too replaced and sterile. Snare did not grow at all. I did like the echo at first, but then thought it was sorta cheesy for the song. Just not as a "Wow" effect as we have heard from you Kenny. I know that you were pressed for time, but just did not make my cut. Guitars sounded good though and the vocals overall were nice too.

Why is there a separate "Kenny Gioia" review post btw?????

    Just curious.

No. Because Charles wanted to separate a few mixes for discussion on their own.

thx. (hope to please you in the future)

    Kenny, love your vids.

Why'd you replace these pristine drums though??!! The stereo GTR and bells bug me a bit. You've got a nicely balanced mix though. Love the chorusy vox on "when I breathe". Would love to hear the original drums in this mix way more than samples though. That totally kills it for me. Makes it sound sterile. Snare pops out a touch too much for me. Seems like the true dynamics got too crushed and flattened the breadth of the perfornance.

Keep up the vids. Love em.

I think for everyone that used samples, i like Kenny's job
the most. Most likely because it's very clear in every aspect
of the mix that he was making it his own thing.
    I personally like it.
Some other mixers seem to be half way between staying
'true' to the song, but then including samples and taking the song
to a more modern pop rock aggressiveness. It comes across as
    more 'confused' to me.

Not that everything is black or white to me, but i'm convinced
by Kenny's mix. If this was the only version i ever heard i
would not question that this is how the song should be.
I can't say the same about some of the 'confused' mixes.

Kenny ~ what's different in the version #6 mix to #5?
Maybe i should have listened to that before posting.

Cuz, as we mentioned before, the Discuss It phase has 2 parts: the general discussion + the featured mixes discussion.

And Kenny's mix is the 1st of the featured mixes.

There will be others coming soon.

Sheeeesh, listening to some of the comments here, I was expecting some kind of unholy mess. Truth is, like CaptainHook said, if this was the first mix I'd heard of this tune, I would have thought that it was the way it should be. I like it. Now, we happen to know the thoughts of the artist and producer on the direction they envision for this tune, and so most of us wouldn't and didn't take things in this direction in light of those thoughts. Still a very worthy mix, though.

I particularly enjoyed the vox treatments such as, for example, the echos in the chorus, and the "whisper" stuff. The emphasis on the word "again" is great. I liked the panning effects on some of the guitar parts as well. I might have not added the bells, but hey, whatever. I like the way the arrangement simplifies in the section just before the bridge, thus allowing the bridge to sound all the more "big". Fun stuff.

I like the 1st pre chorus...vocal effect is nice. On the 2nd pre-chorus I would remove the second delay on the vocal as well and the same on the first chorus (it becomes cliche...and this song doesn't need to be cliche). i don't get a huge punch on the chorus and the chorus, to me, needs to be huge.

Great job! I like the way you locked kick and the bass together it sounds very tight. You did some nice arrangement changes. I like this mix.

Like your different approach Kenny. From the raw perspective, for me, your mix is more a pop approach (this is not bad). For my tastes though I think there is too much compression, of course imho. What is a very big positive for me that you glued the drums together. Very nice, thanks for posting this.

The best version so far IMO. I liked the sampled bass drum, didn't care much for the original that everybody else seem to like so much.

Like another poster, I was really expecting something totally different and maybe even weird considering some of the other comments (including Kenny's), but ....... it doesn't sound that different at all. In fact, it sounds great to me, nothing out of place, samples or no samples, bells, background vox and all.

And I only recognize the differences because I've heard the song 100 times or more myself. But even then, they weren't like 'in my face'. Wish I could do this.

All in all I found the sound very coherent and gelled (much more so than other mixes including my own) so I would be very interested in the way this was achieved. Just balances, mix bus compression or what is it ?

Would be very interested in those mix notes ...

    Maarten
