Default Mixit 3 - please let me know if this is wrong

Hi, im late i know that and so i didn't want to get too into this, but ... I did and I wanted just to hear some thoughts. I love the DVD by Charles (im not that fresh at this but needed a hand)

Let me know if it was wrong of me to just post this here, i will add notes if anyones curious - but tell me if its shit or not first please.

I hope to properly enter the next one as I really enjoyed mixing it.

Oh and thanks for everything around here, youve made me believe in myself!

Sounds like the band recorded in a flight hangar, and they decided to use the space. Singer a few meter in front of you, and the instrumentalists each 20 meters down a line.

Despite this the stereo image is eerily flat. The r'verb gives a perception of stereo while the actual mix is very mono. Like an optical illusion.

Listen to the version Mixerman himself posted. It is very in your face. Very un-mono indeed. And listen to the r'verb he stuck in the second half of the song - very subtle.

As an exercise, try to emulate what he did, and learn from the experience.

Not so bad as my own first mixing attempt, long before I found the womb...

Fair enough, i just dived in really to see what came out. I was thinking of muse a bit so may have overdone the reverb.

I was quite pleased with my drums. I used various verbs to get the sound to have distance in parts, with an ambience verb on the vocals and snare.

Other than that most of it was eqed to my taste following effects chains similar to Charles' DVD suggestions.

Maybe I tried to do more with it that i could.

Come to think of it, the drums did not raise any red flags

Try dropping some of the severe r'verb on the other instruments, bringing them closer, and then using those pan buttons. See what happens.

In your defence: I also thought it was overly compressed. Only to find mixerman's version also overly compressed just now...

Thats the problem of having part of your set-up at home. Seems my 16month old decided daddy needs "Tritanium" compression on his rig, and turned a few buttons for me!

Still a bit mono to my taste, and the lead guitar in dreamscape is still a bit much.

Much better though. Now the drums sound not shabby at all actually

Ok thanks you made some valid pointers there so in response i tweaked it a bit to see if I am mor there.. I'd love to spend more time on it but im sure these forums would rather i wait till the next mix comp of which i hope i wont be on holiday for.

Anyway attached is a more panned less reverb dense mix (although i sneak a delay under the chorus vocals very suble to try to get that letting go feeling)

This document is a great tool for working on individual or small groups of mixing aspects, since the tracks were so well recorded.

I have it open again and continually re-visit it in an effort to improve.

Do a faders-up mix, put an x/y scope on the overheads to see what a phase-coherent drumkit might look like, download the guitar plate file and try to match the sound with a plug-in. Solo those drum tracks and listen.

Read Mixerman's thread about how and why he did what he did - read it like 5 times.

Dig into the arrangement and notice how the bass and drums interact, what rhythms the guitar, organ and electric piano are playing when they are all together active in the mix.

This session is a gold mine of educational material.

Ive had a good read around now that ive had chance, i do realise more about the way it "should" have been mixed. I decided to dive it cold to see what i could do whilst sticking to the rules.

On my reading travels I came across Kenny G's mix and though... damb thats what I wanna do for my mixes (obviously this is a different sort of song). Since I love the heavy stuff like Katatonia I have been researching drum replacements (I have a bunch called the Supersonic Samples). However I still wanted to learn various styles and appreciate the differences. I am learning a lot and how different styles do actually exist and are not necessary a bad thing, unless its against the wishes of the client of course.

this situation was pretty special: Mixerman produced the whole shebang, and he likes to print his effects and commit to the sounds he hears.

The tune mixed itself really well.

Good to hear you've learned something by working on it, I know I do about every day I open it.

    Jesus... what a journey..

I just decided to remix mixit 3 after enough time passing for a laff to see what I would do. I compared it to mixermans after and i can very close in some aspects to a similar sound. Obvious their are differences but I must have learnt so much..

and boy doesn't this mix on here from 4 months ago sound shit!

Cheers for your polite comments, I love these forums!

If something you did 4 months ago doesn't sound shit to you, it means you have either reached a plateau of excellence, or you are not getting any better , or getting worse

i've uploaded it, appologies for not trimming away bits here and there but time time time... still shows how things have improved for me. Im getting more used to accepting the negatives as well so hit me!

No automation just selective use of compression and reverbs and most important, EQ was the most important effect, I used a bit of API and SSL plugs to eq the fit.

    No mastering or bus compression.
