Still, there's hope...
At least some decent bands seem to find a way to make it all work out.
Just to stay on the positive side, anybody's list of decent AND recent bands/ artists who-somehow-found-a-way-to-make-it-all-work-out is welcome

Re: Still, there's hope...
They contacted me about helping them do the album 8-track. I suggested 16 track instead and never heard back.
They really came in at the tail end of the old record biz regime. They are managed by the same people as Björk.

Wow, 8-track... that's drastic. Looks like there's 7 people in the band. Maybe they'd allow the drums to be in stereo?

Just post the article... don't bother reading it

The band took its time recording “The Suburbs,” working and reworking songs for much of a year in homes and studios, using 24-track tape. “I’d hate to take a guess at the budget,” Mr. Butler said, but he added that part of the cost was equipment the band would continue to use, including a 1940s mixing console with vacuum tubes. Each completed song was pressed onto a 12-inch disc, and the vinyl playback was recorded for the final digital master.

Re: Still, there's hope...
We always used two 8 tracks just like EMI used two 4 tracks.
Sixteen track, two-inch, 15 ips. was the first practical "one machine" workflow. I think it was the sweet spot in terms of requiring commitment to a performance and the highest audio quality.

Re: Still, there's hope...
The only two computers we had were a computerized retrieval system in the tape library and a Honeywell mainframe in the accounting department.
I don't remember seeing any screens at all.

Re: Still, there's hope...
One thing that struck me was a quote of one of them saying “I’d hate to take a guess at the budget..”.
He doesn't know?

I would kind of be happy just recording to 2" and mixing down to 1/4" or 1/2" tape. Is there something to be gained by then pressing to vinyl so the vinyl could then be recorded to digital?
