Default I'm getting really fed up of seeing shit like this.

I'm just really fed up of this world sometimes.

Today I got asked "whether I wanted to be payed" for recording a demo. Fuck no, course not, it's just that I really have nothing better to do with my time!

And then I read this shitty article below and got into an even darker mood.

Now I feel like ripping off somebody's eyelids.

Very very very slowly.

The good news, is that it will only take 10 minutes of recording to make one understand these assumptions are entirely false.

That's only assuming they can hear the difference, which seems to be less and less the case.

Someone that can't hear the difference, and who's convinced he can go the DIY way, will certainly not play music that deserves really to be recorded, IMHO.

That class of musicians is probably too much self-oriented and egocentric to create something interesting. The kind of guy who's convinced he's better than everybody else is rarely a great musician.
Humility is what makes you go forward...

And then, there's the one (like me) who thinks it's faisible to record on its own, but know it will be tough, as tough as learning to play an instrument, even more.
This kind of guy will make some recordings himself, but in the same time, stay aware that it would be better done in a real studio with pro-engineers, and much more faster.
He'll hear the differences between the 2 class of recordings, but in regard to the money invested and the popularity of the recordings made, DIY or Studio is a choice to be considered.

Sure, from an engineer point of view, there's a real loss as far as business is concerned. You have to be able to keep the lights on...
But from a musician's point of view, it's the same.
There're fewer places to perform in front of an audience and eventually make money, or gain popularity for a musician. For example, in my town (60,000 inhabitants), 20 years ago, you could go every week to 1 or 2 concert in small clubs. Now, these clubs don't provide concerts opportunity anymore.
In the town nearby, wich is twice bigger, the main concert hall is making half the concert they'd have done for 2-3 years ago.
So there's a loss for musicians too...

Like Slippermann would say, we're all fucked...there's no money anymore !

I met an old musician friend the other day.
Really talented, wonderful guy, DIY all the way a couple of years ago.
He said he had an epifany that doing all the extra stuff (recording, booking, paperwork) was getting in the way of the music.
So he's stopped that and just focusing on what he loves playing music.
It really made me happy cause I know he'll get to the point where he'll do something wonderful. And somebody will notice and brig him along to places he wouldn't have gone alone.

Back to the Mac. Did you know that Trent Reznor, (Nine Inch Nails guy) has tracks downloadable that will open up in Garageband (software that comes with every Mac) so that fans can remix his new tunes? I read a news article recently online about a very well known artist that recorded and mixed his entire album on Garageband. I can't remember who it was, but I had heard of him. First of all it's brilliant because he did it all him self, secondly because it's an incredible marketing ploy! What a great way to draw attention to his new CD. I'll bet you Mac fans bought it to hear what THEY can do on THEIR Macs.

So think about this. Part of your business is online (let's face it, that where things are going) so you need a great computer that will do graphics (pages for $99), word processing (pages again), handle your band photos (i-photo), your video blogs to your fans (i_movie with built in i-sight) and handle all your recording needs (garage band and i-tunes). You buy a Mac and right out of the box you can do ALL these things and more.

I'm not preaching, but I have to tell you that I'm so happy I have a Mac. It's made my life as a musician a lot more simple.
That's as good an argument as any I've heard for Apple killing the music business.

But really this "article" is full of so many different levels of bullshit that I'm surprised you made it to the end.

These are seeming to be the most rewarding types of people to work with. It's like the guys with the most talent also have the capacity to recognize the worth of such talent, therefore they recognize what you're bringing to the table, and never bat an eye when it comes to paying up.

The DIY "indie" type dudes... well... they're fucking poor. They spend their money on beer and vinyl and don't have any left over to spend on actually making their warbly tunes sound halfway decent.

So if they can't hear the difference, it's not gonna matter anyway.

There are some really talented dudes (and gals) out there that have no idea.

I skimmed it and my eyes slammed shut when I read this....

Keep this page bookmarked. I will (FOR FREE) give you great ideas on how to do it YOUR SELF.
Translation: I have something to sell to you. Since you are a sucker (which all DIY musicians are these daze) who is so desperate to "make it" (whatever "make it" means - your guess is as good as mine) and have your face on the cover of Rolling Stone (because having your face on the cover of Rolling Stone is a great way to get laid by real hotties) that you will fork over substantial sums of money to anyone with slick copy claiming to tell you that "yes you can actually make it in the music business!" So read on and get your credit card ready because at some point you will need it!
