Zero Amperes Mic Input, Please...

Hi, All,

As it seems that I have officially hopped on Ye Ole Protools Wagon, I am now on the lookout for a new mic to plug into it.

I already use a Rode NTK and while I like the valvey-warmth of it, I'd also like to have a non-tube unit around for choice.

So, for those of you who know my voice a little, (and anyone who's curious can have a boo on my sig-link below), and who are well-versed in the mic dept., please share with me some possibilities that would best suit my pipes.

My budget, (after some well $pent holidaze ; ), is at ~450 U.S.

TIA,

: J

I have good experience with the Audio Technica 4033 which is around 400 bucks. It's a fixed cardioid which takes a LOT of SPL. It actually sounds warmer to my ears than the NTK, which is a little too fizzy up top for my taste.

Its also pretty versatile, works for just about anything from acoustic guitar to kick drum. It's not a stellar-sounding mic by any means (not many stellar condensers in this price range ), but a lot of bang for the buck.

If you're looking for a dynamic mic, on the other hand, maybe you should get something like a Beyer M88 (which is relatively cheap in Europe).

Cheers, Otek, much appreciated.

Perhaps I can squeeeeeze a couple hundred more outta the ole budget--if it would make a difference in that low of a price range that is...

Hmmm.. by fizzy whaddaya mean exactly? Would that be aggressive-fizzy like Alka-Seltzer or Perrier, or a more subdued fizziness like San Pellegrino??

I'll second Otek's vote on the 4033... but I'll also add the Rode NT2 to the list.

The NT2's presence boost is somewhat more smooth and subtle compared to the NTk... to my ears anyway.

I feel like I've had more sucess with the NT2 and voices in your range than the 4033, but I'd try both of them out to see which, if either one, suits your needs.

I'm gonna probably get clobbered for this one, but.

Do you have a beta 58?

Can take it with you to a live gig

Could be a good mic for when your making music
with others at the same time.

Around your price range, check out the usual suspects:

EV RE20, RE27
Senn MD 421
Shure SM7, KSM 32

Any of which can do double duty as a instrument mic as well.

Don't forget to budget for a shockmount, windscreen, and possibly a pop stopper.

where did the beta name come from anyway?

"its beta than the sm"

or

"it's in beta, so there might be some bugs"

So, you presently use a Rodent K, which you describe as velvety smooth.

And Dr. Bob recommends a Rodent 2, which he describes as smooth and subtle.

I think you need advice from Malice, who's simultaneously velvety and subtle, AND funky...

Cheers, Tim
