Help me pick the mix (EVERYONE)
Here are two prints of one mix. It's a verse and chorus of a song I mixed for an artist by the name of Jamie-X. They aren't mastered.
You're in charge of choosing which mix makes the record. Pick one, and tell me why you chose that mix.
Mix A
Mix B
I appreciate your help in this matter,

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
A is totally my winner. Just feels more solid...B feels like someone smeared some vaseline on your glasses. The bass, kick, and snare in A feel more present and complete top-to-bottom...and feel like they're coming from a more definite place.
Granted, I'm listening on 7506's and a MacBook...but that's where my ears lead me.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
Either my current monitoring situation (laptop + DT770's) is ill equipped to make a conclusive decision, or I'm paranoid that I'm an unwitting participant in some secret converter test. Either way?
I'm voting "present".

It's subjective. This isn't a "gotcha." I think it will be interesting data, and I'm not sure what to expect.
Straight up. Which do you prefer? Or do you feel there's no difference?

Reminds me more of the sound on my old Reggae records.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
A - I'm guessing I'm liking it for the transient information on the kick, to me the cymbals behave a bit differently as well.
But really I was struggeling to come up with those excuses.
You have to choose one, so I go with "A"
But I usually have a hard time helping people with their mixes because I haven't travelled their journey I don't know how they came up with those sounds or why.
and I don't have anough vested in this to really pinpoint those subtle details, this is why I don't frequent the sounding board either.
Sounds like fun though!

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
I gotta listen at the studio tomorrow.
But if i'm being honest, listening on headphones i had no immediate preference.
I know IF i have a preference i'll hear it at the studio. And will post it tomorrow.
Though it's kinda depressing to think that except for at the studio, i don't
listen on anything at home revealing enough to discern a preference between
these two. (i don't really do AB tests at home usually so it could well be the same
for all the previous ones i've done too. :( )

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
Listening on my crappy iMac speakers. I feel A has a little more "freshness", the snare clicks sound a little snappier, vocals have a little more air, Kick goes a little deeper. B sounds a tad compressed overall, I dunno...
Impossible to judge it with iMac speakers, but based on what I hear, I'd take A. The two definitely don't sound exactly the same.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
Mix A is nice, very clean and open. Sharp edges, good depth. I found myself concentrating on the individual elements. Too much detail distracts me from the vocal.
Mix B is nice, but not as open. Seemed less dynamic, in a good way. It's like the individual elements have gelled. Found myself listening to the song rather than the elements. The vocal shines in Mix B.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
I'm chilling out at home A/B-ing this and I've gotta go with A.
I'm nowhere near the studio or an accurate listening environment - but A clearly stands out from my point of listening...
It's clearer, sounds toppier, more immediate, more definition etc.
B sounds darker - my knee-jerk reaction is to ignore it and let it become sonic wallpaper.
Anyway, they sound different for sure. (IMO) <--- can't forget that

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
I love this shit, I could listen to it all day! Reminds me of a lot of stuff I did in my 20s.
I'm preferring B at the moment, as it seems a little more even. A was a little odd to my ear. But in the end I'll probably edit this to agree with weedy.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
It's interesting.
I recently started to use winABX software to do blind comparisons, to see whether I'm able to pick a difference.
So, I loaded that software and listened. Was NOT able to pick a difference. Then I did some studies, and found that there is a difference and very particular one. After that I loaded winABX again. Scored 10/10. Totally in line with this reply to my post.
The way Mixerman stated his question, I prefer A.

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
I prefer B. But thats listening through AKG K701s on my laptop..
It seems slightly fuller and rounder to me, not quite as precise but in some way more pleasing.
Of course I don't claim to have a finely tuned set of mixer ears!
Looking fw to seeing what the diff is.
Cheers!

Re: Help me pick a mix (EVERYONE)
A.
It's more.. I dunno.. "radio ready".
B seems warmer but it doesn't "move".
I really don't like the bass sound on either but then again, I don't think anybody owns any of the records I've mixed
