CAPE 9 is HERE !
If you need to know what CAPE is, we suggest you read the announcement thread
HERE.
★★★
CAPE 9 GUIDELINES :
By signing up, you are requesting to be assigned to a CAPE 9 team.
CAPE is open to all Womb members.
We ask that you fill in the
signup form here.
Yup, we got a signup form this year! Saves us a lot of time, and ensures everyone enters their data in a similar fashion.
Make sure you don't signup twice. If by mistake you DO sign up twice, please PM Goes211 or dwoz to inform them which signup is the right one. Multiple signups will be dismissed as invalid, and we WON'T be sending out PM's to those with multiple signups. As a safety,
once you're done filling out the form we suggest you leave a very short note right here in this thread to confirm you've signed up.
We ask that you tell us about your previous online music collaboration experiences, which role you would like to assume on the team, and that you sign off on the simple legal disclaimer (see below) allowing us to make the final result available for download and streaming on the
CAPE RADIO as well as on a special "CAPE reveal" Womb webpage.
We will elaborate on many details further in this post. We have summarized the important points for you here (this doesn't mean you are exempted of reading this post in full) :

CAPE 9 - IN A NUTSHELL - a songwriter will be assigned to each team. Songwriters MUST have 1song + 1 backup song ready to go when signing up.
- this edition of CAPE is dubbed "Performance CAPE". Think of your contribution as part of an ensemble. Think in terms of feel and interaction with your fellow musicians.
To get you started on that path : your song should sound like a live rendition. A barroom gig, a club date or a stadium mega-concert…your choice. Make us believe your team was there.
More on this subject in the detailed info below.
- remixers will get access to stems of the CAPE 9 song of their choice and will be allowed to mash, tweak, twist and transform.
- each team will have a producer. The producer will have final say regarding artistic choices, but must act within the scope of CAPE.
We will hand pick producers for their creative vision, their artistic talent, their team management and people skills. Producers will be monitored closely by the CAPE admins.
- mastering : while there will be no official mastering, each team will submit a level-matched .wav or .mp3 file with an average of -10 dB RMS over the whole song.
- songs will be made available for streaming and download on the CAPE RADIO, as well as on a special "CAPE reveal" Womb webpage.
- team reveal pages will sport a link to encourage donations (no obligation)
to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

DETAILED INFO
★★★
INTRODUCTION
While most of the info detailed below will sound like old news to many a CAPE veteran, we'd like to remind them that each edition of CAPE welcomes a plethora of newcomers.
Old news may be very important info for the new guy.
One thing we've noticed over the years is that seasoned CAPE participant and newcomer alike often don't take the time to read this info thoroughly, and then ask very basic questions like "Dude, when's the deadline again ?".
The scope of the event and the time necessary to solve genuine problems means that for all questions relating to info that's available right here, we may simply point you to this very post.
So, you may as well read it all now.

"PERFORMANCE" CAPE
This edition of CAPE is dubbed "Performance CAPE". We're always ranting about how a good performance will trump everything else. So, time to focus on the performance. Think of your contribution as part of an ensemble. Think in terms of feel and interaction with your fellow musicians.
To get you started on that path :
your song should sound like a live rendition. A barroom gig, a club date or a stadium mega-concert, a FOH board mix…your choice. Make us believe your team was there. Be creative, use your imagination : you could also be performing for one person at a rehearsal. Just make it compelling. What we are looking for is the feeling of a PERFORMANCE.

That is something that audiences draw out of performers, so live renditions are often held out as examples of performances.
Single pass and/or first takes can feel like performances because they haven't been overwrought.
There's also an idea that it's about "honesty" or veracity. This is certainly valid too. Snapping time and pitch to grid can certainly be the musical equivalent of turning a lilting delivery into a monotone."

ALL PARTICIPANTS
We ask that you read
this tutorial called CAPE Catastrophe.
It is a compilation of technical info and how-to's related to working on online music collaborations and more specifically CAPE.
★★★
PRIVATE TEAM FORUMS
Each team will have access to a private forum, visible only to them and thewombforums.com admins.
These forums will be used to discuss the day to day progress of the team.
★★★
THE SONGS & THE SONGWRITERS
Each CAPE team will be assigned a songwriter who's task it will be to come up with the tune you'll be playing.
The songwriter will submit a song, and will have a second, backup song.
This means that if you sign up as a songwriter, you'll have to bring at least 2 songs to the table right away on August 1st when we reveal the teams.
No excuses. It's perfectly OK to write a new song specifically for the event, but we don't want teams waiting for the songwriter to caugh up the goods.
Each team will have to sign off on a song choice by August 15th at the latest.
To summarize : the songwriter comes into the team with 1 song ready to go, plus 1 backup song. If the songwriter wants to write a new tune...you have 2 weeks to make it happen.
The songs will remain the property of the songwriter, no matter what alterations the team or the remixers bring to it.
Songwriters may also sign up for a musician spot on a team.
What happens to the rights of the songs ?
Quote:
CAPE, and TheWombForums, take no copyright interest whatsoever in your song nor in the sound recording.
CAPE, and TheWombForums do take a one-year non-exclusive right to exploit the sound recording, by putting it in our CAPE radio, and other promotional uses.
CAPE also imposes a requirement on participants, that each participant recognize that the songwriter credit resides with the assigned songwriter for the team (if he actually submits a song), and the team collectively and equally own the arrangement/sound recording rights (no matter who actually does the heavy lifting). In the absence of a specific agreement, this would be the legal default anyway, but it serves to clear things up.
So to wrap things up, as a songwriter, you don't relinquish anything by participating in CAPE. You do walk away with a production of your song, but if you want to exploit the CAPE sound recording yourself (like use it on an album) you'll have to come to an agreement with your team.

★★★
PRODUCER'S ROLE
The producer's role is that of a creative catalyzer. He should be able to communicate an artistic vision and coordinate the team's progress.
The producer isn't necessarily there to push his own vision ahead. He may very well defend a global team vision. But as too many chefs often make a bad soup, the producer will have final say regarding artistic choices.
That being said, being a producer on CAPE does not mean receiving a "carte blanche" to do just as one pleases.
A producer should bear in mind that this is CAPE, and that each team member should have an equal chance at contributing their part to the final result. Automatically dismissing a player or a part simply won't work.
We ask, however, that both producer AND players should go the extra mile when confronted to artistic differences to come up with a working solution.
You should remember this is not a competition, and the process should be a fun experience for all.
Communication will be key.
In any event, we will be monitoring producers VERY CLOSELY, and we will do our best to ensure reasonable chances for all voices to be heard.
Any no-shows, drop-outs, requests for personnel changes and disputes should be brought to the CAPE admins' attention. PM Goes211 or dwoz.
Finally, producers may sign up for a musician spot on their own team for any role (including mixer & lead vocals). Producers should state their desire to have a musician spot in their producer signup sheet.
★★★
MUSICIANS
Musicians & mixers signing up for this edition of CAPE should, as always, be real team players prepared to contribute readily to the team's progress.
While we strive to ensure everyone involved gets a fair representation in the final result, as a musician you must acknowledge that a "fair representation" may mean your parts not being used, or used only partially.
This of course, is very much a grey area and one which we promise to monitor very closely. We intend to keep most of you extremely happy, but in reality we simply know that it's not always a feasible objective.
Therefore we ask musicians just like the producers to do their best to be a part of the puzzle and to work problems out.
You may of course bring any problems and disputes to the CAPE admins' attention, and we will make sure we address each of them asap.
Before you sign up, make sure you will be available and ready to spend some of your time working on this project for the duration of the event.
★★★
REMIXERS (and MIXERS)
Once the songs are revealed on November 15, remixers will have about a month to de-construct the tunes and rebuild them into a different format. The original mixers will provide them with mixed stems (such as stereo drums, bass, guitars, keys, vocals, and bvoxes). At this stage, everything will be game. No input from the original team, just the remixers and a bunch of stems, from which they will create something different. If you sign up as a Mixer, please note you'll be requested to provide stems along with your mix.
★★★
SIGNUPS & SELF-RATING
On to the signups, and the self-rating system. When signing up, you will be asked to state your abilities & evaluate yourself by using one of the definitions stated below.
The definitions are the following :
Adequate – You can do this well enough without embarrassing yourself publicly.
Skilled – You are more than capable at this, and have been known to turn heads.
Gifted – You are good at it, you know it and all your friends will tell you the same.
Maestro – Move over John, Paul, George & Ringo (or insert your own private musical deity), there's a new kid on the block.
Try to be objective. Overstating your ability may result in putting yourseld AND the team in a difficult position.
Please don't forget to state your location and your GMT timezone. It's important for your teammates to know what time it is in your neck of the woods when they need to get in touch with you. Remember Cape participants are all over the globe. (the GMT thingy appears to be a puzzle for many a CAPE participant, and we've witnessed some hilarious misprints, such as a Californian stating GMT+8 as his timezone, thereby clearly indicating his brain was in western Australia

.
Our brand new signup form should prevent most of these, but if you're in some exotic location,
here's a handy link for finding your own GMT.)

TECHNICAL INFO
* FORMAT
Teams needs to submit their song in the form of a wav file or an mp3.
This can be an attachment or a link to download the song.
IF YOU LINK US TO AN MP3 :
We need a 256 kbps mp3 at 44.1 kHz
ANYTHING ELSE THAN 44.1 kHz WILL PLAY BACK AT THE WRONG SPEED ON OUR RADIO.
We will NOT be handling the sending of WAV files to the general audience, and we will point those who request them to the producers.
* LEVEL MATCHING
We are requesting that all mixes this round have an Avg RMS of no more than -10 dB.
-10 dB Avg RMS is conservative but still fairly hot level. It pumps, but it ain't crushed. In comparison, most modern releases have an Avg RMS of -5 to -6 dB.
Please note: a number of software apps such as Wavelab or Soundforge actually measure RMS incorrectly. They do it in a way that mathematically appears to be accurate to the software programmers, but they're not incorporating a 3 dB offset established by AES many years ago for measuring Avg RMS of stereo signals. In reality, the reading you are getting from Wavelab or Soundforge, as well as some other apps, is inaccurate. When they're showing you an Avg RMS of -10 dB, the audio's Avg RMS is actually -7 dB.
To calibrate your software measure this audio file :
1kHz_sine_-10dB_RMS_avg.wav
1kHz_sine_-10dB_RMS_avg.mp3
Its Avg RMS is -10 dB. If your software measures the file's Avg RMS as -13 dB, then you will need to offset all future measurements by 3 dB to get the true Avg RMS.

BANNERS
Ever since CaPE I, team members have launched the tradition of creating team banners.
We love team banners. Just so the website remains as fluid and fast as it is, we do ask that you please make sure :
- your banner size should be
425x85 pixels, 150kb Max.
- you
don't use more than 1 banner in your sig. Time to get rid of those CAPE 6, 7 or 8 banners, dudes !
★★★
MAKING CAPE USEFUL
We've started with this last year, and we think it's a good thing to do it again.
We'll be including a link to encourage donations to the
International Committee of the Red Cross in all pages and links when we reveal the songs.
We'll also add a tiny ICRC logo like this :

There is no obligation to make donations, hopefully the exposure will encourage others to do so or at the very least raise awareness for the ICRC.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a private humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland. States parties (signatories) to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 and 2005, have given the ICRC a mandate to protect the victims of international and internal armed conflicts. Such victims include war wounded, prisoners, refugees, civilians, and other non-combatants.
The ICRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement along with the International Federation and 186 National Societies. It is the oldest and most honoured organization within the Movement and one of the most widely recognized organizations in the world, having won three Nobel Peace Prizes in 1917, 1944, and 1963.
We feel there can hardly be a controversy about the ICRC being legit. But if you can't live with it, please don't sign up.
