But not everything that Edwards and Rodgers worked on was successful. Debbie Harry's 1981 album with the song "Backfired" was a commercial flop in the states in spite of getting decent radio exposure.

My favorite sounding songs are the ones that are well written and executed/performed/arranged/produced.

I can narrow my favorite sounding records down to a couple of thousand starting with the first mono hi fi records.

No need to thank me for not posting them since I don't have the time anyway.

OK.... Since you are too much of a wuss to post your list, I will put myself into a psychic trance, channel your record collection and post it for you....

Nobby's top 10 favorite albums of all time according to Peter the Psychic's best guesses (counted down "David Letterman style")

Number Ten: "Screaming for Vengence" - Judas Priest - Columbia - 1982

Number Nine: "Kaleidoscope" - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Polydor (UK) - 1980 - Geffen (USA) 1985

Number Eight: "Agents of Fortune" - Blue Oyster Cult - Columbia 1976

Number Seven: "You Are What You Iz" - Frank Zappa - Barking Pumpkin 1981

Number Six: "Diamond Life" - Sade - Portrait/Epic/CBS 1985

Number Five: "The Wall" - Pink Floyd - Columbia 1979

Number Four: "Instincts" - Romeo Void - Columbia 1984

Number Three: "What's Going On" - Marvin Gaye - Motown 1971

Number Two: "Three Of A Pretty Pair" - King Crimson - EG (UK) Warner Bros (USA) - 1985

Number One: "Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch" - Frank Zappa - Barking Pumpkin 1982

Wow! Nice list Nobby! Lots of Columbia/CBS on it. Weedy must have been a good influence on you....

I almost put this in my list but it was getting ridiculously long. "Just Too Easy" is a great sounding record

George Duke's "Dookie Stick" is also on Nobby's list but missed the top 10. If my psychic readings are correct, it is bubbling under at number 17.

Far be it for me to gore someone's sacred cow

But I agree that a successful record (artistically as well as commercially) doesn't EQUAL good recording.
A lot of times it just doesn't matter.

It certainly isn't necessary however it can help and it can especially help the performance as part of an interactive process.

At the end of the day, it's about the music.

I sometimes listen to music that has lousy sound. I was just listening to some Billie Holiday. Some of the recordings sound pretty good considering but a few of them are awful b/c the only surviving ones were recorded from a scratchy record on a phonograph.

They aren't bootlegs either, they're put out by Verve.

America has some pretty good songs. They are no CSN&Y, but they can hold their own when compared to the current crop of pop stars.
