Default Most intelligent (wo)men in music

Let's indulge for a while in the sort of "10 best hair styles in Rock", benign interrogations one notorious magazine seems rather fond of.

Something like:
- who would you say are the really smart people in music?

You're allowed at most ten names (is that even reachable? ).

Order is unimportant.

Classical composers not allowed.

Subjective appreciation of poetic value contained in lyrics should not be considered. Only interviews

A few obvious ones I can think of:

Pete Townsend

Frank Zappa

Brian Eno

It might get more difficult from here on though...

Billy Corgan, even though he's also a bit of a poser. He's clearly a smart dude.

Sting comes across as pretty intelligent. Given that he was a teacher before he got famous, it's not all that surprising.

Peter Gabriel, definitely.

Kate Bush, no question.

Neal Peart is brilliant. Not just because of his lyrics and drumming ability, but he's extremely well-read, and very clearly a brainiac in interviews. Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage shows all three members to be smart cookies, but Peart is a step above.

Henry Rollins.

There are certainly some others. I'll post more if I think of them.

Personally I would add Mike Patton, Fiona Apple and Devin Townsend to the above list.

Hevy Devy might not be well known in the mainstream circuit but sure is a big brained rockstar to many.

Surely there's an answer, but it's pretty irrelevant, ain't it?

@Tubasolo and for the French I sincerely would ad Claude Nougaro and Jacques Brel, but their both dead and never played any rock-related music. Boy that would be one hell of a rockband if they would have!

Lets not forget Madonna.

Persona and marketing being what they are, she's always been the magician behind the magic.

I can't remember her formal education, but she's proven herself many times over that she's a very shrewd person and doesn't suffer any fools.

Throwing up here.

She's a manipulating lip-synch hooker who has traded on lowest common denominator issues from the time she fucked her first record producer.

Hardly what I could ever qualify as intelligent beyond the street-smarts of any highly successful call-girl.

Now Laurie Anderson is another matter... she hasn't sold her skank ass through shit songs and tawdry, unreadable books or shit videos but would anybody really prefer to attempt an intelligent conversation with the material cock-socket instead of Ms. Anderson... or Joni Mitchell?

Cheers,

I agree completely with Aardvark...

I'm not really familiar with many female musicians, mostly just those who are singers so I'm interested in hearing about smart, sexy women to pine over.

Though to add to the list, Steve Vai has some pretty good interviews about his understand of music and the mental work required to get to where he is.

Then there's Tom Scholz, Masters degree in engineering from MIT. Most everything on Boston's first album was also recorded in his basement studio.

Oh, and just for some possible contention, Jello Biafra.

Now, Aardy...

I think that's a little harsh. Good on her for being able to read the tea leaves and tender the currency that she had. Recognizing what your true talent is and leveraging it is something that most people never manage.

as if being a receptacle for non-mitochondrial DNA is such a bad thing.

If we're talking about music, personally I'm mostly interested in a type of intelligence called 'creative talent' as it pertains to music.

That said, the bass player for Iron Butterfly was an actual rocket scientist.

When I saw Madonna, my first reaction was pretty much Aardy's.
However.......
She was at the top of the pyramid for quite a long time. Not a particular good singer, not a particular good dancer, not all that beautiful, so how did she do it?

That's the only ones i get off the top of my head. Probably because we had 100 people in the the bar, a Colombian quartet and a tail of "native dancers" (basically sexy girls doing amazing things with unnamable parts of their bodies) along with extensive amounts of vodka and late night cooking.
