I have temporarily unbanned our OP so he can apologise, get over himself and hose off with a few gallons of Summer's Eve.

Please be so kind as to allow him a chance to make-up.

I was thinking a bit about VCAs and buses, and how much fun it can be to mix something, anything.

I've got this idea,
Imagine, if you will, glass domes over the musicians in a band or orchestra and you could lever these domes up and down when you wanted them And their parts to be heard. A grand performance!
You could even deflate the singers ego!

Wake? Didn't you mean lunch?

In an odd way, this thread reminds me of the 10CC "I'm not in Love" vid Mixerman posted here last year. One could argue that *that* was a pretty creative use of a console...

If I am following your argumentation correctly, shouldn't that be "super being arranger"?

And while we're on the subject, at which point does it go from "arranging" to "mixing"? Is there, in fact, such a thing as mixing, if the definition in both cases is "manipulating various sound sources into a cohesive whole using a console"?

Don't worry, it's an honest question.

Insulting (and provoking) Aardie now........

UH-OH......

(biting my tongue.....)

EDIT:

I can see now that events moved rather quickly.

Spacey, you may not understand this, but Aardie is being incredibly nice to you right now.

And no, I don't hate you, really - but I was utterly enraged by your actions and attitude when you attacked me for no good reason (probably more so than I ever have been with anyone online) and, while my anger has abated it has not dissipated entirely. However I'm perfectly willing to set it aside at this point.

For those who don't have a program, Aardie is our beloved bouncer.

I suspect that he's a recovering goalie.

My feelings are kinda hurt, but I'm going to man up and address my concerns head-on.

My first involvement in this thread was based on a simple terminological misunderstanding. I read the first post and saw this guy talking about "arranging" a song using a mixing board. I was like, "you can't arrange a song with a mixing board, that's like trying to design a building with a hammer". (And oh, if only that metaphor had come to me then...).

I didn't fully grasp what WAS going on, but I knew it wasn't what the general population understands "arranging" to be, so I wanted to clarify. See, precision of communication is the most important things in the universe because without it we're just a babel-ing bunch of idiots who can't get anything done. It's a cause I'm very very sensitive to.

Now, arguments over the definitions of words aside (and this thread moved aside of that...very aside), the twat of an OP decided that my problem with him was his composition, or his rusty mixing skills or whether or not his loops were LOOPS or simply loops he created.

So the first thing that hurts my feelings is that I was misunderstood by a twat. It reminds me of the time that I was drug to a party by a friend. At said party I was introduced to a fat, middle-aged, female friend OF that friend. Determined to make the best of a dull situation, I engaged the lady in conversation for a few minutes and asked her questions like, was she having a good time, and did she know many people here, and such like that. At some point in the conversation she said, "Oh you might as well forget it, dude, I HAVE a man!"

I said, "wha?"

It's that kind of misunderstanding-cum-rejection that causes me emotional distress. I'm a sensitive, warm-hearted guy and it's painful to suffer rejection from something I didn't even want to be NOT rejected from. Follow me?

So then I decide, alright, Spacetwat is a hamcake and everybody thinks he's either Slipperman or Studiojimi (the latter guess being the better one). But I'm convinced he's either Skrillex or Ded4Now...who truly might be the same person anyway.

This leads me to take the road of satire. Now, satire is something I feel like I'm good at. And in order for satire to be good, it has to be subtle. Unfortunately, by being subtle, satire is generally not appreciated by large portions of the general public in a way that is satisfying to its creator.

So I kinda had to see that little disappointment coming. A few people got it, though, and that was a life-saver for me.

I think in order to salvage some resemblance of usefulness out of this part of my life, I offer you the following mini-dictionary:

Composing is the act of creating a composition, and is done by a composer. Composing is the creation of the melody and lyrics (if any) of a piece of music. This is the person(s) who get to copyright the piece and receive composer royalties when the song makes some kind of money.

Arranging is the act of creating an arrangement, and is done by an arranger. Arranging is the adaptation of a musical composition to a particular set of instruments. For example: arranging "La Macarena" to 27-piece high-school jazz ensemble so that the pertinent parts of the composition (melody, counter melody, rhythm, etc.) are recognizable and (potentially) pleasing to listen to when performed by 18 saxophones 6 trumpets, trap kit, bass guitar and xylophone. The parts are arranged such that they fit the framework of those instruments rather than the original ones. This guy can get royalties too, but different ones than the composer, and only for HIS arrangement, not other ones which may or may not exist.

Mixing is the act of creating either a permanent or transient mix and is done by a man among boys. A mix is created by taking various individual source tracks and combining them, adjusting their relative balance, timbre, dynamics and so forth, into a cohesive final product. Decisions on the complete inclusion or exclusion of certain source tracks also comes under the heading of mixing. Mixing can be done using pre-recorded source tracks, or source tracks that are being performed in real-time by attendant parties.

Mastering is the act of creating a master and is done by strange alchemist freaks who practice voodoo and sorcery. A master is the end product of taking one or more mixes (see above) and adjusting them sonically for artistic merit and then preparing them technically for large-scale reproduction. While a mix could be said to be the original sculpture by an artist, a master is akin to the mold created by the technician at the factory into which many rounds of molded copies will be poured and solidified. Not only does the technician need to verify that the mold holds true to the artistic vision expressed in the original (mix), but he also needs to make sure the fill holes are the correct diameter, in the correct place, that the mold is solid and will hold up under repeated fillings and heatings and coolings and so forth and so on.

After reading these definitions, I don't see how anyone can see what this dork did as anything other than a mix. It began with a composition, I suspect, but it turned into a mix. A consolation prize could be given for saying "using a mixer as a synth controller, -ish".

So, in conclusion, yes, my feelings were hurt. However, now I feel better. I ate a pair of chocolate pop tarts while I was writing this, and that did me some good too. Having great pals like Aardvark who look out for my feelings makes it a better world, and I want you all to know I love you.

With lifted heart,
Shotgun
XOXO
