I'm not so sure about this... are there any recordings to back up Ethan's supposed brilliance?

Or do you mean that he's a "brilliant musician" in the sense that he's highly reflective when playing music?

If you were talking to a group of bartenders or builders you might use the phrase "he's a brilliant musician" as he is conservatory level.

If you come and say that on a forum of professional sound engineers, you might want to rephrase that to "he plays an instrument".

O great, an argument about what "brilliant" means. A good example of why sensible debates are a rarity around here.

Now when you say "rarity," do you really mean sometimes, not often, plenty.....could you define rarity, please?

Default Re: Ethan Winer in TapeOp

I suggest we should create a scale so we could clearly define the level of musicianship.

It could become something like :
1. worst ever heard musician
2. bad ...
3. just ok
4. ok
5. good musician
6. extremely good
7. great musician
8. brilliant
9. genius
10. God

Of course, it then would be necessary to be able to measure this...

What's annoying with all this discussions, is that it makes an awful ground noise that tend to make it really difficult to come trough and listen and be careful only to the "good" stuff.

IOW, aren't people willing to learn be able to make their own decisions ?
They could be misleaded (I've certainly been in this case), but recording is like every other art : one has to go trough trial and errors to learn, being misleaded make's the journey longer but doesn't make it impossible to do.

More than that, after having been misleaded, you then start to think twice about something before simply believe it.
And that could be of some help : learning to learn and to think.

Fixed it for ya.

I don't think that even Ethan would claim that he's a "brilliant" musician.

He plays the cello. Great. So does my cousin Debbie, who, as it happens, is a brilliant biochemist.

ROSTROPOVICH was a brilliant cellist.

So was Casals

I'm sorry, this is just too amusing to pass up twice.

I think it helps to have worked with a brilliant musician to recognize one. Like I recorded David Lindley. He's brilliant. I'm not going to make this a name dropping exercise, but I would like you to describe to me someone you've recorded that is brilliant. Just so we have a gauge of reference.

Thanks,

Mixerman

Nick Cave is pretty well known. I like him as a songwriter, but as a "musician" or rather as a singer, he more or less talks. It suits his style but meh.

Moondog is strangely moving in a magical sort of a way. Real name - Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916 - 1999. Weird unusual mixture of styles, he composed music for all sorts of instruments and merged classical harmonies/melodies with jazzy and experimental stuff. What I like is that his music speaks of a century lost to us, but rather than the imagery of small spaces (typical of a lot jazz - at least I feel that) with it's whisky glasses and hooker clichés, I find his music describes panoramic shots of cities of another epoch, like a figure too far away in the mist to be seen properly, but close enough that we can see a fuzzy outline.

Fantastic.

Most famous song (but by no means representative) is
Bird's Lament.

Here's a link:

As for Dio, I've hardly heard anything by him, it's just that "Dio" means God
