I subscribe to this kind of reasoning, no overdubs or retracking allowed.
I'm cool with sample replacement though. I don't do it often but I don't care if someone else does.

Re: Mix it Like a Record Event – Info
No, This is not the thread where you say 'I'm IN'
There will be a dedicated thread for entering the mixing event and voting for which song you want to mix.
That thread will be up when the song submissions thread closes on monday at midnight. Meaning when all 'mondays' everywhere in the world end. So it kinda depends what time zone you're in really ...
Keep your eyes open for it ... We have 3 days left for song submissions.

Saturday August 18 at midnight. You get 5 full days to sign up / vote for the song you want to Mix. The song that gets the most votes then will become available for download, hopefully within 48 hours after the entrance / poll thread closes.

Re: Mix it Like a Record Event – Info
Hey guys I'd be all in for another mixfunproject (I can't miss a single one) but I won't have a song to submit - since I don't write/record my own music - or let's put it this way: nobody wants to hear what I write
Is it possible to take part in the mixing process and spilling the beans (no problem with revealing my single secret I have)?

Do you mean, can you mix the song without submitting a song?
YES. Absolutely.
Some of us mix. Some of us record our own music. Some of us do both.
Any1 may participate in any of the following... the song submission phase, or the mixing phase, or both.

Re: Mix it Like a Record Event – Info
This sounds very fun and educational. From what I heard from Cape V, there are some great mixers here.
Charles the John Ralston Tracks I heard were excellent. Great sounding Vocals.
Look forward to taking part.

What about sample ENHANCEMENT, dropping samples under the drums that are already there? I do this almost like I do EQ.

Re: Mix it Like a Record Event – Info
so then what about triggering tones and white noise off drums - this is adding things not in the session either.
just trying to work out which tricks in my bag are legal.

Without consulting with Chris (so let's see if he agrees), but I'd say triggering tones or white noise (like for kick or snare) would be cool.

Re: Mix it Like a Record Event – Info
About kick + snare replacement...
I see this event as an exploration in how others get their sounds when every1 is starting with the exact same tracks. I feel it will be less educational if every1 replaces their kick + snare. Not much to be learned from that. Other than a discussion of "how" one replaces a kick or snare.
I see the core of the conversation of this event being how you get a great sounding mix, even if your tracks may be less than perfect. So, my preference is to discourage sample replacement.
It seems to me that the one thing every1 always wants to learn how to do is get great drum sounds. And how will people learn if they simply don't try to get the drums themselves sounding great + instead just replace or augment them?
Just speaking personally, I rarely use sample replacement. I feel the real kick + snare always sound much better. (And I'm NOT talking about world-class recorded tracks, I'm talking about your run-of-the-mill mediocre ones.) It's more work to get a great sound, but the end result always feels better to me. And is way more responsive to the drummer's performance.
In those situations when a producer has added a kick + snare sample to the live kit, the first thing I do is get the live kick + snare sounding their best. I then add in the samples to see if they would be better or be useful as an addition to the live drums. And nearly every single time after listening to the samples I simply mute them. They suck in comparison. They're static + lifeless. Totally void of emotion + personality. And don't add a thing to the drummer's performance other than a robotic feel.
Bottom line I think we will all learn more without sample replacement.
