Poor Old Autotune!!!!
I was thinking about this the other day:
Imagine you invented Autotune.
Arguably the most important (good or bad) invention to happen to music in the last 15 years.
And all you hear is how much people hate it.
Must be sad.
Here's to you Mr. Autotune.
Without you, my work would never be the same.
Enjoy.

Yeah, I imagine he has a hard time driving to the bank everyday with all the tears in his eyes and weight of all that money slowing him down.

It's more like hating mustard gas.
Even though it's true that it takes a person to misuse it,
It serves no real humane or defensible purpose

The same can be said of many vocalists....
The good news is that I had a singer come in who required a small adjustment and he opted to come back after he performed better. He actually was down trodden when I said it could use some "Autotune"....
On the opposite end I had a guy who Autotune couldn't help and he didn't think he needed it... My wife walked in while I was mixing and said the Tape Machine need Calibrated... but I tracked it direct to Pro Tools..
Doh!
I wonder if the guy who invented Mustard Gas was sad when they pulled it off the market
Autotune=Mustard Gas
Alsihad=Pro Tools or similar species.

Autotune is an amazing tool. Most of my non musician friends and family members are savvy enough to a know when its being used. They say things like "Oh they put the computer on his/her voice" or "He's using the talk-box" They really don't care...

Re: Poor Old Autotune!!!!
You have to admit, you walked right into it.
Although all kidding aside, there is something to be said for singing it right and not needing Autotune, or Melodyne, or any of those other pitch quantizers.
What we're railing against here is the use of Otto as an end in itself. I don't mind saying I've used it-- but sparingly, and you generally can't hear it.

Re: Poor Old Autotune!!!!
I agree there really is no excuse for not puting in the extra time to sing the parts correctly. I like the plug-in because it makes pitch correction less tedious. I remember when it first came around and my father telling me stories about how pitch correction was done prior. Lots and lots of rewinding.

I couldn't disagree more.
I hated the world without Autotune. Hated it.
Let me first say this. There is some music where being out of tune is fine. I rarely record that kind of music.
I still spend the time to record 8 or more takes to get the best possible performance from the singer.
After that, (let me tell you fellas) the singer is no longer feeling the song. They are just singing notes to get them in tune. For me. I don't feel like wasting time getting a sterile feeling recording just because it happens to be in tune.
Some singers have good pitch. Some don't. But most singers can emote something. And getting a singer with bad pitch to nail all those notes without Autotune does not make a better performance. It takes 3X as long and is completely frustrating.
Yes. Yes. I know. Great singers can sing in tune. I know, all you "holier than thou" crusaders.
Keep dreaming.
In my world, I need all the singers to sing in tune.
Enjoy.

Re: Poor Old Autotune!!!!
n what kind of music is it allegedly "fine" to sing out of tune?
I don't think it is about that at all.
It is about your tolerance for pitch variation. And the machines create a much narrower window for what is called "correct" same as with time.
Many great drum performances that don't SOUND out of time will still get "corrected" if you use Beat Detective on them. But
that doesn't mean to HUMANS that it was "out of time" to begin with. In any meaningful way at least.
If you have thatgreat emotive vocal, then why not go back and drop in the words that are unacceptably out of tune?
Sorry but I don't think the vocals on the records I make sound unemotional. Maybe in part because I don't want anyone to sing the whole song 8 times.
