Default Rounding Out The Kik Mic's

We all know the standard kik mic list;

D112
Beta 52
D6

Of which I've got the D112 and the D6... I can snag a Bet52 whenever I wanna use one. (Which ain't that often)

The other standards are the RE20 and Beta 91. I've used em' for live work quite a bit and I've always been pleased.

But which is the better one to actually throw some cash at?? Or you wanna suggest an alternative?

Neumann FET 47 or a TLM103 in a pinch, kick being one of the few things it's pretty good for.

That's an awesome combination.

Play with the distances/positioning of each mic in combination with the other, and I defy you to find a bass drum where it won't work.

For an "outside" kick mic, if you can find it, the Beyer 380 is near unbeatable.

You should also try the Audio Technica 2500, but it's a bit more specialized. May not work for everything.

Oh, and did I mention the Beyer M-88?

hmmmm... Might have to snag a D12 and another 421.

I'll def try the TLM103 out... as well as careful placement of the U47.

I'd classify the C1000 with Pimp's Beta52 idea... only for straightening bent nails.

There's so much else the M88 could be used on, that it might just end up in the locker too.

Any more suggestions?

sennheiser e602 is good for a modern kick sound.

Very true. But you have to get it modded for about 10 dB less sensitivity first, or it will clip. Of course, then you won't be able to record the sound of an incadescent light bulb filament.

I still have a grudge against that mic. I just listened to a VERY early recording I did using $200 condensers and I was flabbergasted by how good it sounded, much better than recordings done a year later with TLM103's. It took me a while to figure out what was going on.

As they say, its all subjective.

Recently did a session in which the producer pretty well insisted on the sounds provided by a Beta 52...I prefered what I was hearing with an SM7 (by no small margin)...

In the mix, it all still sounded like a kick drum, but with (to me) vast differences in fundamentals and attack....

Just for grins, the next day I swapped out the Beta52 with an EV 454...which smoked either of the 1st two choices (again, by no small margin)...

between the RE20 and the Shure SM91 I'd go with the RE20 without second guessing - way more versatile on the kick and for other instruments.

I did some nice recordings with a Beyer M99 (I think) - special kick mic with built in EQ - if you need some pre-eqed modern kick sounds it's an easy choice - though I'd never use it for roots music.

I am a big fan of the Subkick and a D6, or the 421 and the D6.

The D112 I like, but it is a bitch to get right in my opinion. Too clicky or too mid clicky. Great on a florr tom though, but I like 421's on toms thru a API.

Might have to try the 103. Will give me something to use it on. HATE THAT MIC!

Default Re: Rounding Out The Kik Mic's

Option 1 - 421 inside the hole. Decent condensor outside the kick (resonant side). Go U47, or just about anything TLM.

Option 2 - E609 inside the kick pointing at the beater. D112 outside

Option 3 - D6 inside on a pillow, off to side, pointing at the beater. Any condensor outside the res head, use blankets to build tunnel

Option 4 - C1000 shoved up a cats ass, set the cat inside the kick. SM57 inside a Folgers coffee can, can laying on it's side, with 57 pointing away from the kick.
